What’s Your Summer Agenda?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winona chapter.

We all get excited for the time of year that the Mid-West turns from a frozen winter tundra to almost feeling like Mexico on our lake beaches. Depending on your specific plans, it is still the best time of the year. If you still have no clue what this summer includes here are some options to get you started!

Summer Session:

Taking classes this summer is a great option, whether you are falling behind and want to catch up or want to get ahead.. Winona has three different sessions to enroll in classes and you can start enrolling NOW! If you plan to go home, take classes at your local college or community college, just make sure they will transfer. Here is the link to Winona’s summer session.

Jobs:

The dreaded “job”… Most of us are broke college students so it’s a good idea to get a job, part time or full time. It is nice to have some extra cash. Summer jobs can be more fun though; becoming a nanny, lifeguard, or even a greenhouse worker are nice options to make some extra cash and be outside.

Clinical Hours/ Shadowing/Observation Hours:

Does your major require a certain number of hours to be hands on?  Many HERS majors require this but even if your major doesn’t require these hours it’s a good idea to get into your field and know what your career does on a daily basis. Summer is a great time to do this.

Internships:

Is your LinkedIn looking a little empty or non-existent and/or your career just isn’t taking off like you hoped? It may be time to get an internship! They can be tough to find but if you have any connections use them. Keep in mind not all are paid so you may need a job also but at least you will have your foot in the door and a head start on your career!

Summer Camp/ Volunteer Work:

There are tons of opportunities out there to work for summer camps or volunteer at them. Humane societies are always looking for help as well as nursing homes. Look around and get some hours in, they look great on a resume. Summer is also a great time to go on mission trips either in the country or out of the country.

Whatever your plan is don’t forget HAVE FUN!

She is from Cottage Grove, MN and enjoys her weekends in the cities. She enjoys being the Her Campus MNSU Chapters Campus Correspondent and also Young Life. She wishes that fall season was year round, but living in Minnesota she will have deal with all the seasons it brings.
Meet our writer Courtney D. Jones! Courtney is a junior at Winona State University majoring in Mass Communications- Advertising. She is consistently busy juggling school, working two jobs, and on the recruitment committee for Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, so coffee is a necessity. But not just any coffee, it must be Starbucks Blonde Roast, with a dash of peppermint mocha creamer and a fourth of a packet of sugar. She has a die-hard love for all things beauty and fashion, and dreams of owning everything on her Pinterest boards one day. With her bright and bubbly personality, she loves meeting new people and sharing a good laugh. As a Chicago native, her happy place consists of drinking a cold microbrew with her favorite Giordano’s deep-dish pizza while watching her beloved Bears team.
