13 Things Every True Winthrop Eagle Should Know

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

As a Winthrop University student, there are just certain things that you need to know in order to call yourself a true Eagle. As much as we all would like to think that we fit the description of a “true” eagle, many of us don’t know what that actually means. So, that’s what this list is for.

If you want to call yourself a true eagle, you first need to know some key things about Winthrop. And even though nobody expects you to know everything about Winthrop, as long as you know the basics and some fun trivia, then you’ll be good to go.

So, take a look at the list. How much do you know?

1. Winthrop was founded in 1886 as an all-girls teachers college.

2. Winthrop was a college until 1992 when it was renamed Winthrop University.

3. Winthrop is Clemson’s sister school. Our all-female days were meant to educate women to be the “ideal housewives” for the men at Clemson.

4. Miss Starr in admissions is always there for the students. She wants everyone to feel like they can come to her with anything. She even wanted me to tell you that she will be your campus grandma if you need one!

5. Winthrop athletic teams play in Division 1.

6. There are just over 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at the university.

7. WU’s male/female ratio is 39% to 61%.

8. Our president is Dr. Dan Mahony; he started in the summer of 2015.

9. There are over 160 student organizations on campus ranging from Greek Life to interest clubs to community service organizations.

10. Digs is named after Dr. Anthony DiGiorgio, one of Winthrop’s previous presidents.

11. Our mascot is Big Stuff and his counterpart is Little Stuff.

12. David Bancroft Johnson was our founding president.

13. The words to our alma matter:

The Chapel holds our history, Each new day Tillman rings, Your halls are rich with memories, To which we’ll always cling. A part of each one here remains, As a part of you we claim, Alma Mater, may your name be grand, Winthrop ever stand. The friends we’ve made, the memories, Will last a lifetime long, We soar to reach the goals, We’ve set as Eagles bold and strong. May others see our loyalty, Ever honored you will be, Alma Mater, may your name be grand, Winthrop ever stand.

How did you do? Did you already know most of these fun facts?

If so, I think it’s safe to say that you’re a true eagle.
