I don’t know about you, but college isn’t exactly the movie-esque dream that I hoped it would be. Kinda obvious, I know, but dream big, right?
Maybe it’s because I attend a college in a small town (shoutout to Winthrop University), but here are some things I thought would fulfill my college dreams, but they weren’t that great in reality.

parties
I feel like this one was anticipated, so I’ll put it first.
I’ll be honest, this one can be subjective, but I’ve never been to a single stereotypical “college party.” I tried once, I guess, but the room was so small and the vape clouds were gaining hierarchy, so I left. Depending on who you are, smaller hangouts with friends can be a lot more fun than the party scene.
What I’m saying is, if you’re expecting something out of After or something, I would reconsider.
Food
Once again, depends on your campus, but the food can get extremely tiring. Eating from the same dining hall and whatever your meal plan includes can really put a damper on your appetite. Especially on late nights, I don’t think I can eat another Taco Bell or Wendy’s meal at 12 A.M.
I thought I would have so many nice dinners with my own homemade meals with all of these recipes, and the truth is, college tires you out. Meal prep is the last thing on your mind, so back to eating cereal and microwave mac and cheese for dinner.
making friends
Kind of exposing myself here, but it can be difficult to make friends in college, especially if you’re not a social butterfly. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll merge into a friend group, but it could take a while. If you go into college with no connections, it’s every man for himself.
And, if you don’t have many friends, that leads me to my next topic.
weekends
Finally, classes are over, and it’s Friday night. Now what?
Besides homework, the only thing left to do is go home if you have no one to hang out with. It’s even more unfortunate if you’re a long way away from home. Guess it’s back to watching Family Guy and the microwave mac and cheese again.
Tons of people go home over the weekends, so the campus is also dead.
Other than that, a small town college provides a Walmart to visit with friends, and that’s it.
money
You want to get a job, but jobs take up a lot of your free time. Then you have to make the decision, do you want free time or spending-money?
I’ve never thought I would be so desperate for student discounts and finding coupons online as I am.
College isn’t just going to classes and then going to your cute little barista job at a library. You gotta grind just to splurge on the good toilet paper.

Overall, college just won’t live up to your expectations. I know that sounds really negative, and hey, maybe it will, and if it does, that’s awesome.
It’s still a fun few years, just… different than I had in mind. Just like high school, honestly.
Because when I’m finally able to get the good toilet paper, I guess I can’t really complain.
