A few weeks ago I discovered that Oreo Cakesters were back.
I was ecstatic to find this out, and I hurried to get myself a box! I was worried that I wouldn’t like them but.. obviously, I did. I mean, come on.
Over the next few weeks, I would offer a cakester to anyone who happened to be by me when I ate a pack. I started hearing startling responses.
Do you want one?
No, that seems too sugary for me.
Do you want one?
No, that seems like.. like I wouldn’t like it.
Do you want one?
No, that sounds gross. Like that can’t be good.
That last one was my roommate and so far any person that’s been around us when she’s said that has agreed with her. She tells me that she’s pretty sure I’m the only person who likes them.
Look, I know preferences vary from person to person. I get it. BUT- I’m sick of the LIES saying I’m the only one who sees their DELICIOUSNESS. I know there must be others and that at large there are probably a LOT of people.
I’m here to set the record straight.
COURT IS IN SESSION.
EXHIBIT A: WE LOVE THIS dessert snack COMBO
For starters, we love cake. This is a large generalization but GENERALLY, cake is favored by US. We serve cake at almost every special occasion. We obsess over their flavorings and their pairings. We create shows completely dedicated to their perfection and presentation. We love cake.
This in turn makes it clear why we formulated the invention of the snack cake. The little cakes that, if we were lucky, we’d find in our lunch boxes wrapped in plastic glimmering like a gem. The little cakes that we could trade at the lunch table for almost anything. We love those little cakes.
Just look at Little Debbies. The variants of the Oreo Cakester exist in this company’s catalog in droves.
Swiss Rolls! Ho-Hos! Ding-Dongs! Hostess Cupcakes! Zebra Cakes! Devil Cremes! Devil Squares! Fudge Rounds! THE LIST GOES ON.
A creamy, frosting-like filling in the middle of a fluffy, decadent cake-like structure. If this format wasn’t enjoyed why would we have so many variants? And why would those variants sell so well?
There are 3 top desserts sold by Little Debbies: Oatmeal Creme Pies, Swiss Rolls, and Nutty Buddy Wafer Bars which all collectively sell over 200 Million Cartons a year. TWO OF THOSE are the classic cake-like structure and filling combo that the Oreo Cakester emulates.
THE NUMBERS ARE THERE! People love this combo… so then you go on to tell me there’s no way people like Oreo Cakesters? The Oreo Cakesters that in various forms have been loved for generations? Try again.
EXHIBIT B : WE LOVE OREOS
In 1912, it all began with just a sandwich cookie and a dream. The concept was simple, and the execution was just the same, but the result was ASTOUNDING. Oreos became a sensation. It swept the nation and then the WORLD. We love Oreos!
There’s no question about this. “Anyone can say this not everyone loves Oreo-” SHUSH I HAVE THE NUMBERS.
- Oreos have been the world’s biggest selling cookie since 2011, selling cumulatively over 500 billion cookies since 2011, according to the Guiness World Records.
- No one even comes CLOSE to Oreo. In 2014 its closest competitor was Gamesa who it was still making three times the numbers in sales over.
- Oreos are available in over 100 countries and selling well in THEM ALL.
The Oreo company was founded in 1912 and since its inception it has been America’s favorite cookie and has been stable in its sales for literally DECADES. The numbers do not lie people! THEY DO NOT LIE. The world loves Oreos, and that is why the company has been doing so well for years and years. It is a true feat and testament to their impact how long they’ve stayed at the top! We love Oreos!
EXHIBIT C : THEY WERE LITERALLY BROUGHT BACK BECAUSE PEOPLE LIKED THEM LIKE ARE WE SERIOUS?
A reason for the Oreo Cakester’s discontinuation was never provided by the company, but we know that it’s NOT because people weren’t buying them.
At the same time that the cakester was discontinued, Kraft Foods split in two, and this meant Oreo had to make some strategic movements to stabilize itself before going forward. This could mean cakesters were just an unfortunate casualty of the split.
In any case, if the original cakesters weren’t a hit wouldn’t we think that Oreo would change the recipe when reintroducing them? Wouldn’t that be the logical thing? It would. However, Oreo didn’t change a single thing. Why? Because they’ve always been good.
How can anyone think that after 10 years Oreo would bring back a product, unchanged, that wasn’t good? That people didn’t like or buy? They wouldn’t. They brought back Oreo cakesters because they were LOVED and GOOD.
In conclusion… the numbers don’t lie. The pure sales numbers show that people love cake snack desserts, and they love oreos. How could they not then love these Oreo snack desserts? After a decade of waiting, we’ve finally gotten them back. I won’t let ANYONE try and deny their deliciousness.
If you haven’t tried them, give them a try.
If you don’t like them, it’s okay. Just know that lots of people DO.. me included.
Me especially.
