How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

Welcome to 2016! The time for us to keep our new year’s resolutions has arrived.  Can we do it?

Every year we think long and hard about what we want to resolve in the New Year, many times we pick the same thing we did last year. We’re feeling confident going into it that this is our year, it’s our time to actually keep these resolutions that we’ve struggled to keep for years.

We often ask ourselves, “What am I doing wrong? Why can’t I keep my resolution? What can I do to follow through this year?”

Lucky for you, I’ve got a few tips on how to be successful at keeping your resolutions this year.

1. Pick something that you know you can do. When thinking about New Year’s resolutions, a lot of people can feel like they can do anything. They get excited about starting off the year right and choose something that isn’t necessarily realistic. Let’s say you’re taking 18 credit hours, you work part time as a babysitter for a local family, you’re involved in a couple of organizations on campus, and you just started a new relationship. Considering all that you’re involved in, going to the gym 6 days a week probably isn’t the most realistic goal for you to have in the New Year. Make it more doable; set a goal to go 3 times a week. You have to set yourself up for success.

2. Make a resolution with a friend. Goals are much easier to achieve when you have someone pushing you to keep it up. Partner up with your best friend, your roommate, your boyfriend, etc. Make the same resolution so that you can keep each other going. Working with someone else creates healthy competition; you’re both going to want to “win” so you’re more likely to stick with it in the end.

3. Don’t give up. This sounds really simple and it is. Just push yourself. If you don’t keep your resolution for a day, don’t just quit. Get right back at it the next day. Giving up isn’t going to get you anywhere. You’re going to end up being disappointed in yourself that you couldn’t keep your resolution and who wants to be disappointed in themselves? I know I don’t.  So just keep going. Follow Dory’s advice and just keep swimming. Try, try again.

There you have it ladies, a short and sweet list on how to keep those resolutions you’ve made this year. Good luck!! You’ve got this!
