Cardi B, beloved hoe enthusiast and now famous rapper, recently took to Instagram to complain about how she had almost been “scammed” by a girl she had hired to flatiron her wig.
According to Cardi, she was charged four hundred dollars for the services and Cardi was quick to protest. Understanding Cardi’s background made it easy for me to see how this could have struck a negative chord with her, but as a celebrity now I believe it is vital that Cardi realize, people are going to expect her to pay more for their services now.
According to Huffington Post, Rihanna at one time was paying her stylist what I pay in tuition in fees for her hair WEEKLY. In comparison, four hundred dollars could be seen as nothing but chump change.
Don’t get me wrong, four hundred is a bit pricey for just flat ironing her hair, shoot, I could have done that for fifty bucks and my broke self would have been one happy camper to have that in my pocket. However, I can also reason on why the hair stylist would have charged such a fee. It seems that we have entered into a time in which artists and other freelance workers have been getting underpaid and just downright scammed for their works and services.
Artists of all sorts are expected to lower their prices from what seems like outrageous ranges to ones that would actually put them into poverty. Art supplies, makeup tools, and instruments are expensive, y’all. Yet, constantly on Twitter and other social media platforms I see potential customers trying to haggle artists into selling them their works or services for stupidly low prices, when in reality they should be charging way more. Even when those who do provide a service are paid the price they originally decided on, all too often they are not given tips, which is rude and can almost feel like a slap in the face after they have just put in their time and effort to try to improve your appearance.
So, yeah, Cardi, love you and all, but let’s not assume people who are working to make you look good are trying to scam you when in reality all they’re probably doing is trying to make a honest living and do what they are passionate about. Who are we to stop them?
