On Sunday, August 25, 2017, Bobby Tarantino, more widely known as Logic, performed a powerful song along with a message on a topic that many are concerned about: suicide. The song title, “1-800-273-8255”, doubles as the National Suicide Prevention hotline. Logic performed along with Alessia Cara and Khalid, both of which have chart-toppers of their own. Logic was backed by hundreds of suicide survivors donning the hotline’s number on the front of their shirt and the words: “You Are Not Alone” on the back. Several survivors and crowd members were brought to tears. “I don’t give a damn if you’re black, white, or any color in between. I don’t care if you’re Christian, you’re Muslim, you’re gay, you’re straight — I am here to fight for your equality, because I believe that we are all born equal, but we are not treated equally and that is why we must fight.,” Logic proclaimed during the performance.Â
After the performance was over, calls to the hotline increased tremendously. In fact, by over 50% total. There was a 30% increase in calls in the week following the performance, and the national hotline says it was the “second-highest spike in calls in the history of our service.”Â
The song follows through the life of a young man struggling with bullying, his sexual identity and how he keeps pushing through. It ends with him standing with his partner and their newborn baby, relaying the message that there will always be something to live for.
Logic said 1-800-273-8255 was “the most powerful song he has ever written.”Â
