10 Reasons Why the High School Musical Reunion Was So Important

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

Even though it has been a decade since High School Musical premiered on Disney Channel, it is just one of those movies that will always be a classic. Despite being 10 years old, the songs and lessons in the movie remains relevant in our lives today. Here are 10 reasons the replay of High School Musical is still important today.

1. The songs

Who doesn’t love a good Wildcat jam? Not only are the songs catchy, each song comes with its own killer dance moves. Every song is memorable and makes for the perfect sing-along. My roommates and I can belt out every song as if it has been 10 minutes, not 10 years, since we first saw the movie.

2. Childhood memories

For me, the first time watching High School Musical was truly life changing. And watching it on the tenth year reunion wasn’t any different. Every time I watch it, I find myself reminiscing of my younger days and my incredibly tacky ‘Get’cha Head in the Game’ shirt from Limited Too.

3. Troy & Gabriella

These two were setting relationship goals before relationship goals was even a trending hashtag on Twitter. Their love for each other was so precious, both on and off screen. I’m pretty sure every girls’ relationship expectations have skyrocketed after watching every High School Musical movie.

4. The reliability

I was in 4th grade when the first movie came out. Since then, I pretty much watch every movie in the series at least once a year. Watching the third movie during my senior year of high school was an incredibly emotional experience I was not ready for. Throughout high school and college, I’ve found the movies to become even more relatable as I have grown up and have learned to appreciate just what the characters were going through. Still a little bummed that my high school cafeteria never broke out in song though

5. The friendships

I think my favorite part of every movie is the friendship. I love how the different social groups clashes and mingles and how each of these groups challenges the status quo. Not only are members from every single possible social group finding a way to be friends, they’re also incredibly supportive of each other and would do anything for their friends. It proves that sometimes the people you get along with the most are those whom you have never thought about forming a friendship with in the first place.

6. The sequels

I will be forever grateful that High School Musical had more than just one movie. The other two movies only make people love the whole series even more.

7. The importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone

Sure, new things can seem scary, but that didn’t stop Troy from belting out “Breaking Free” while playing basketball in the same night. What I love is that he found a new passion that no one would’ve ever expected from him,  especially a new passion that no one supported initially.

8. No dream is too big

Everyone in this movie dreamed big, especially Sharpay. She seems a little crazy at times, but she knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to dream big. ‘Bop to the Top’ says it best.

9. Embrace Change

Change is a scary thing, but sometimes one tiny change can impact your life in the greatest way possible. Singing was never a part of Troy’s life plan. And while it took a while for him to embrace it, he realized eventually that it makes him very happy and everything worked out well for him. No change is ever too scary.
