15 Things to Thank the “Mom” of Your Friend Group For

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

We all have friends who are the so-called “moms” of our friend group.  They’re the ones we go to for just about everything.  When you need help with homework, when you can’t figure out how to use the washing machine, when you just need a hug.  We’d be lost without them, let’s be honest!  On this Mothers’ Day, let’s not only appreciate our real moms, but also give some credit to our second mothers.  Don’t forget to thank them for:

1.      Making all your dinner reservations.

They’re always the one to call the restaurant and reserve a table for the rest of your friends.  They always do this way in advance to be sure you get to eat at the restaurant you want.

2.      Making sure you get places on time.

Although sometimes you want to kill them when you’re scrambling to get ready to go somewhere and they’re impatiently waiting by the door, you know you’d be late every single time without their guidance.

3.      Making sure you do your homework.

Without them you’d probably be failing school.  When you’re sitting on your laptop, Netflix open, and eyes starting to close, it’s prime time for them to swoop in.  It’s absolutely true when they say, “they have eyes in the back of their heads”.  You can’t get away with anything.  And when you try to make excuses, “I’m just taking a short break…I swear I’m starting in a minute” its no use.  It’s to the point where you just laugh as they give you “the look”.  You know they’re always right.

4.      Taking care of you when you’re sick.

They’re the friends who bring you chicken noodle soup in bed or hold your hair back over the toilet.  They have the magic touch.  They always have a trick up their sleeve that makes you feel better in a matter of seconds.

5.      Teaching you how to do “real world” stuff.

When you don’t have a clue how to be real person, how to do the simple tasks that you probably should know how to do, they always come to the rescue.  You know exactly what I’m talking about: laundry, making your class schedule, shipping a package…the list goes on.  “Mom” friends have a magical power that gives them the knowledge to be capable of all of these tasks.  It’s really quite amazing.

6.      Making every decision for you.

“What should I eat for dinner?”  “Should I stop at Walgreens before or after my class?”  “Should I wake up early to workout or just work out in the afternoon?”  Our “mom” friends always have the answers!  You text them whenever you’re feeling uncertain and they make basically every decision for you.

7.      Finding the best sales.

When you show them a pair of shoes online that you like, nine times out of ten they will find the exact same pair for $3,000,000 less.  But how? It really is a mystery.  Is it a coupon, is it a code? Nope.  It’s just one of their many talents.

8.      Dividing the check at dinner.

They’re always the ones to swoop in when your friends have been arguing for 15 minutes over how you’re going to divide the check up amongst your friend group.  They take charge and the job is done faster than you can get your wallet out.

9.      Dealing with adults.

They’re the ones who know best how to communicate with the difficult adult species.  They always know just what to say and they’re every adult’s favorite person in your group of friends.  They even know how to deal with and communicate with your own parents better than you and you’ll find your real mom calling them to make sure you’re alive.

10.  Waking you up in the morning.

Those tough mornings when you somehow don’t hear your alarm blaring, they’re there to make sure you get up and get to class on time.  You wake up in a panic just to realize they’re laughing at you by your bedside.

11.  Always being prepared.

They always have all the essentials.  You need a tissue? You know where to turn.  Advil? They got it.  It starts to rain and who whips out the umbrella? Their bag is always stocked with anything and everything you could possibly need.  They’re like a real life Mary Poppins.

12.  Being brutally honest.

When you need honest advice on something they’re the ones you go to.  If an outfit is ugly, if your hair is a mess, if you’re wrong in a fight with a friend, you can count on them to keep you in check.  They’ll tell the truth whether you like it or not.

13.  Giving the best advice.

They always have a solution to every problem no matter what it is.  They come up with the best ideas and know how to fix everything and make it all better. Mama really does know best.

14.  Knowing how to make you smile.

They are the ones who know you like no one else does.  When you’re having a bad day and it seems nothing can make it better they know just what to do or say to make you laugh.

15.  Always being there for you.

Most importantly, let’s thank them for always being there for us.  Through good and bad, through thick and thin, the “mom” of our friend group is always a friend you can count on.

We all have a friend like this and their work should not go unnoticed!  Make sure to celebrate your “mom” friends on this Mothers’ Day and thank them for everything they do for you!
