As bad as they may be, they are must sees.
While I personally love the classic films from the past, sometimes all I really want to watch is a really bad, yet really good movie. We all know the type. You watch them during a sleepover, a rainy sunday, or when you need a good laugh. With the holidays coming up, there is no better time to see my favorite bad movies.
- Twilight
-
Twilight is based on a book written by Stephanie Meyer. The storyline is a classic preteen love triangle between Bella Swan, the werewolf next door Jacob, and the mysterious vampire Edward. When I saw this movie for the first time, I was sad to see the credits start to roll. It was the perfect blend of romance, awful acting, bizarre colored filters, and heartthrobs. I was never one for fantasy meets reality plots, but I loved the twilight series, and was so grateful for the obscene amounts of movies they really did not need to make. If you have never seen it, I would definitely recommend a watch party with your closest friends.
- MamMa Mia
-
I know this is controversial, but hear me out. Objectively, this absolute classic is not winning any awards for its cinematography or acting. Nevertheless, Mama Mia is one of the best and most fun movies in my repertoire. Not only is the soundtrack one of the best out there, but the plot is so fun and one that anyone can enjoy. I might have a soft spot for it, but there is really nothing better than listening to subpar ABBA covers and watching Meryl Streep frolic in Greece.
- The Room
-
During the pandemic, I took a film class titled “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly”. We watched a wide variety of movies, one of these being the cult classic The Room. Directed by Tommy Wisseau, the story follows Tommy as the main character, and his deceptive fiancee. In my personal opinion, this movie is simply terrible. It reminds me of a home movie I would make with my brothers when I was younger, and yet it has a very large following. This is mainly because a lot of viewers watch the film for the sole purpose of poking fun at how bad it is, and I don’t blame them. Some theaters even do interactive showings, with cue cards on when to boo, clap, etcetera. Though I probably could have gone my whole life never seeing it, I am glad I watched the film.
- Hot Rod
-
Hot Rod is a classic Lorne Michaels film with the usual cast of Saturday Night Live alums. The premise of the movie is hilarious, following a teenage boy turned stuntman, Rod, played by Andy Samberg. When Rod’s step father has health issues and needs surgery, Rod decides to raise the money for him out of spite. This movie is truly so funny, and one I wish I had known about sooner.
As you can tell, I am a huge supporter of sub par movies. To me, they are one of the greatest things to come out of Hollywood, maybe besides Goodfellas. So, grab some popcorn, turn on the TV, and explore the world of movies so bad they are good.
