I’d like to think I’m an amateur DIY-er, and one of my favorite things to do is finding cheap alternatives to expensive, trendy room décor. With many of us moving into new dorms or apartments this year, I thought I’d share some of my favorite room DIYs. It can be hard to make a new place feel like home, so I hope these hacks help you settle into your new place.

1. Contact Paper over ANYTHING

Using marble contact paper on an old desk or any other surface is a quick, easy and inexpensive way to spruce things up.

2. DIY Fur Bench

This one is a little more labor-intensive, but it’s totally worth it! Pick up some wood, furniture legs and a fur rug, and you’ll have pretty much everything you need to make a cute statement bench! Read the instructions here.

3. DIY Neon Sign

Very inexpensive and very cute. All you need is some EL wire and any bendable wire. Add some super glue, and voila! You have your very own neon sign with whatever phrase you want! Read the instructions here.

4. Ikea Hacks

Ikea hacks make for some of the best ways to upgrade a plain-jane item. One of my favorites is taking their Marius stool and replacing the top with a chic slab of wood. Instant upcycle!

5. Dress up Your Dresser

What about that boring, plastic, 3-drawer storage unit every college student and their roommate has? Add a little gold paint and some filing cabinet labels, and you’ve got yourself a whole new chic storage unit!

I hope these DIYs have inspired you! If you try any of these out, tag us on Instagram @hercampuswisco—we’d love to see them!!
