5 Great Things About Being Single

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

The time that you spend single can be some of the most exciting and beneficial moments of your life, and here are a few of the reasons why…

1.      You’re allowing yourself time for personal growth

Being single offers up an incredible opportunity to learn more about yourself and your interests. So take the time to explore anything that you find interesting, whether that means a new club, a hobby, or a career! Use this time in your life to focus solely on yourself, your personal goals, and expanding your horizons. Invest time in developing your career further and meeting new people to help encourage your own personal progress.

2.       You don’t have to compromise when it comes to doing what you want

We can all agree that having to plan things around your own schedule is hard enough, especially as a college student. But trying to plan things around two busy schedules is near impossible. Even though being in a relationship comes with many benefits, there can be some things that you have to give up, such as spontaneous plans because they don’t work out for the both of you. Being able to make impromptu decisions on your own is one the benefits of being single and something that you should take advantage of. Take that spur of the moment opportunity, go out with the girls randomly during the week, and embrace your singleness.

3.       You’re keeping your options open

One of the benefits of being single is that you are allowed to go on as many dates with as many different people as you want to. Just as the phrase “there are plenty of fish in the sea” suggests, there are a lot of other single people out there in the world. Take this time to play the field and get to know your individual “type.” So go ahead, ask that cute boy from your math class out, and figure out what you’re really looking for.

4.       You don’t have anyone to impress but yourself

Being single means that you don’t have anyone to impress but yourself. This means no reason to shave your legs (unless you want to), no reason to put on makeup (unless you want to), and being able to dress how you please (show as much skin as you want, girlfriend!) While you’re single, embrace the opportunity to be as impressive or unimpressive as you want before the time comes where, at least in the beginning of a relationship, there is always pressure to impress.

5.       You’re learning to love yourself

While you are single, it is important to learn how to define yourself outside of a relationship. Take the time to learn how to accept yourself without the validation of another. Learn to accept your individual beauty, and be proud of who you are knowing that you are enough, and your worth is not measured through the judgement of others. Finding this self-love is incredibly important for creating both a better present and future for yourself.

All in all, being single is an incredible chapter of your life, and you should make the most of this experience.
