Journalism is a tricky major to take on. From critiques of mainstream media to the decline of the newspaper, it’s hard to always feel optimistic about the field. But for the students that take on the challenge, studying journalism can be the most exciting and optimistic experience.
1. You get to use your creative side.
Writing on its own is a form of art. Every journalism student knows what it is to have proper grammar drilled into their brains and how to make words fit together flawlessly. Not just anyone can put their thoughts on a piece of paper eloquently.
2. You help determine what the world talks about.
Though we are just students, we are being taught how to take what the world gives us and communicate it effectively. Directing local, national and global conversation is no simple task.
3. You inform others of what is important.
Whether it’s daily news, special reports or advertising campaigns, journalism students know how vital it is to inform the public. Someday we will be covering the groundbreaking stories everyone talks about.
4. You do the dirty work others don’t want to.
As a journalism student, you are learning how to uncover a story or revitalize a company’s advertising campaign. Though we love it, being a journalism student isn’t as easy as others may think.
5. You take on the challenge of entering a “dying field.”
As a journalism student, you know that the field certainly isn’t “dying.” Instead, you are the one who is excited to come up with new ways to communicate in the ever-changing digital era.
If you’re a journalism student, props to you! Overcome the negative connotations and keep on rocking those writing skills!
