On February 21, 2020, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer, reawakened their “Friends” fanbase. The cast of friends each posted an iconic picture from a past “Friends” photoshoot with the caption, “It’s happening…” while tagging HBO Max as well. For the past few years, there have been rumors of a Friends reboot, but none of them were true. Could it be that this beloved sitcom’s reboot is finally in the making?
The show that ended in 2004 has gotten a “yes!” on filming a reunion for the show’s 25th anniversary. Jennifer Aniston made an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show when she first sparked the rumors of the friends reunion. The actor was asked about a possible reunion on Monday during an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres’s show. While she said that a reboot of the sitcom wouldn’t happen, she said Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc,David Schwimmer and herself were trying to figure out a joint project. “We would love for there to be something, but we don’t know what that something is,” she said. “So we’re just trying – we’re working on something.” (Michallon, https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/jennifer-aniston-friends-reunion-ellen-rachel-courteney-cox-a9175211.html )”
After giving $425 million for rights to the sitcom, HBO is now helping Friends get their special up and running for their 25th anniversary that happened in September. Trying not to get their fans’ hopes up, Kauffman explains, “It’s not going to beat what we did,” (Andreeva, https://deadline.com/2019/11/friends-reunion-special-works-hbo-max-1202784418/) The cast feels they hit their show to a “T,” which is one of the reasons why the tv show will not have a reboot or new season. “We did the show we wanted to do. We got it right, and we put a bow on it,”(Andreeva, https://deadline.com/2019/11/friends-reunion-special-works-hbo-max-1202784418/ ) said Crane. The love for their fans is the real reason they want to film a special for everyone.
HBO Max explains that in May 2020 the popular tv show will be available for streaming, along with an “untitled unscripted episode,” (Bhagchandani, https://www.scmp.com/magazines/style/news-trends/article/3073873/friends-has-new-home-hbo-max-and-jennifer-aniston) which people are speculative is when the cast of Friends will sit down and talk about life after the show that took place in their mid to late twenties, instead of a brand new episode. Kevin Reilly, HBO Max’s chief content officer eagerly informs the public, reporting, “The reunion will take place in the original Stage 24 of the Warner Bros. Studio in Burbank, California. Directed by Ben Winston, it will also see Friends’ original creators Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane back as producers. It taps into an era when friends – and audiences – gathered together in real-time and we think this reunion special will capture that spirit, uniting original and new fans,” (Bhagchandani, https://www.scmp.com/magazines/style/news-trends/article/3073873/friends-has-new-home-hbo-max-and-jennifer-aniston.)
Being a die-hard “Friends” fan, I think I am speaking for all of the Friends fans, both old and new, that we are patiently waiting for answers from this one episode reunion: Did Ross and Rachel end up together? Did Joey or Phoebe end up with anyone? Who is living in the famous apartment in New York City? How are Emma and the twins? The questions continue to go on and on, and eager fans are craving for answers when the TV shows exciting reunion will be released in May of 2020 on HBO Max.
