Five Tips to Start the New Semester on the Right Foot

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

We’ve already been back in school for about two weeks now, but are we actually adjusted to the routine again? Of course not— it takes longer to get back into the groove of things than one would expect. Plus, maybe it’s just us pretending like this is all one big dream and the semester didn’t actually start (WHEN AM I GOING TO WAKE UP?!). Going back to school after such a relaxing break can be difficult, but I have a couple of tips to help you make this semester the best one yet!

  1. The most important (and sometimes most unrealistic) tip: get a good night’s sleep!

We all have new schedules we are probably still unaccustomed to. And frankly, we are all just trying to get a grasp of our homework load in all of our classes, but a minimum of eight hours of sleep is a goal to shoot for every single night. There is nothing worse than yawning all day and relying on caffeine to keep your eyes open.

  1. Eat a fulfilling breakfast

This is the one I want to make a point of mentioning. There is nothing that energizes me more than a well-rounded breakfast. Some options: eggs and toast, cereal, oatmeal, or yogurt and granola.

  1. Drink water, and lots of it

If you don’t keep a water bottle with you at all times, you are basically doing yourself in. It’s important to stay hydrated during the day: I’ve noticed that I start to get headaches on days I don’t drink enough water. Not staying hydrated isn’t worth the headache, trust me.

  1. Keep a planner

You may think this is an extremely obvious tip— well, it’s not. I don’t know how I would survive without my planner! I have way too much homework, and it would be impossible to remember it all without a planner. It’s nice to know that everything I need to do is written down in the same spot. I know some people use their phone as a planner, but I believe it is better to have a physical planner, especially for when your phone is out of battery.

  1. Pick out your outfit the night before

Man, I can’t tell you how many mornings during the week already I have run late to class because I was spending too much time looking in my closet. If you pick out your clothes the night before, you’ll be doing yourself a huge favor by relieving yourself of not only the stress of running late but also of the fear of not knowing what to wear.

When the semester started I knew I was going to struggle with getting back into a routine, which we all know is extremely difficult after a luxurious vacation. But these easy five tips will help keep you organized, energetic, and stress-free.
