Guys Take On: Halloween Costumes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

It’s the middle of October, Freakfest is approaching and October 31st feels like it is tomorrow. What should I be for Halloween? This is the question haunting us girls this Halloween season. Should we dress scandalous or conservative? Sexy or scary? Here’s what a couple students on the UW campus had to say…and just a warning, their answers might frighten you!

  1. Do you like Halloween? Why or why not?

As a whole, Halloween is a great tradition that allows people to show off their creativity and have no shame. Its great when you can dress up as whatever you want and no one will judge.”- Yaniv

“I love Halloween! It’s one of my favorite “holidays.” Halloween gives people a chance to dress up and act like something or someone they’ve always wanted to be. Pumpkins are also delicious.”- Karan

Halloween is personally my favorite holiday of the entire year. Things always get wild when people dress up, and when you mix liquid confidence with costume confidence – that’s a potent combination. And above all it’s the one night of the year girls can dress slutty without criticism (yes that’s a Mean Girls reference, don’t judge me).”- Dan

  1. What’s the most clever/coolest Halloween costume you’ve ever seen?

A guy cut a hole in the top of a night stand, put his head through it, and called himself one night stand.”- Yaniv

“I once saw someone dress up as an iPod. Box, headphones, and everything.”- Karan

The most clever costume I’ve ever seen is a girl who made a dumpster out of cardboard and went as a “Cum Dumpster.” Classic.”- Dan

  1. What do you think is the most overdone costume for girls?

These days for girls: the less you wear, the more overdone.”- Yaniv

Bunny rabbits. Why? Why does every girl dress up as a bunny?”- Karan

The most overdone costume for girls by far is the bunny/lioness/cat ears paired with a leotard. It’s the old standby for girls just looking to show off what they got, but any girl with a little creativity could come up with something different and still look good.”- Dan

  1. What would be your ideal costume for a girl?

Anything but a bunny, mouse, or cat.”- Yaniv

“My ideal costume for a date would really be anything creative. Not too outrageous though. Just something that shows off a girl’s sense of humor and innovative side.”- Karan

If you’re going to a date party I think you and your date should always have matching costumes so everyone else knows who belongs to you. It also means she’ll have a super-cute pro pic that will make all of her friends totally jelly they weren’t invited.”- Dan

  1. What’s would be your least ideal costume for a girl?

From a creativity viewpoint, a bunny, mouse, or cat…from a less platonic viewpoint, anything that covers her whole body or face”- Yaniv

“A bunny rabbit”- Karan

The least ideal costume for my date would be anything that’s heavy on makeup, face paint, or props that would “get in the way.”- Dan

– Maybe this bunny will do

  1. How do you feel about girls dressing scandalous for Halloween?

It’s hot, just don’t dress up as anything that Miley Cyrus would dress up as/do anything that Miley Cyrus would do.”- Yaniv

The only reason I don’t understand girls dressing scandalous for Halloween is because of how cold it get’s in Wisconsin during that time. All these girls are still showing more skin than clothing. Other than that, I don’t have a problem with it. I think it’s lovely.”- Karan

The scandalous the better! It’s Halloween: there’s NO rules! It shouldn’t matter what other people think of you anyways, but especially on Halloween.”- Dan

  1. How do you feel about girls dressing scary for Halloween

Love it. You may scare your squeeze away, but at least your keeping up with the Halloween tradition!”- Yaniv

Halloween is meant to be scary so if a girl dresses scary then she’s doing it right. A+.”- Karan

I really support girls dressing scary, just don’t dress so scary that I’m afraid to hit on you and could potentially have lingering nightmares about your costume.”- Dan

-Maybe not this if you don’t want nightmares ah!

  1. Do you have any advice for girls this Halloween?

“Consult with me first.”- Yaniv

“Just because your friends and what may seem like the entire female community are dressing up in scandalous ways for Halloween doesn’t mean you should feel pressured to. Dress up as what you truly want to be. Be safe, have fun, and PLEASE wear a jacket.”- Karan

For Halloween this year I would tell girls to break away from the stereotypical, redundant outfits and find something original. If it’s been done before, DON’T do it. If it’s controversial and/or highly suggestive, DO IT!”- Dan

So collegiates, let’s get creative this Halloween! Come together with friends and do a group costume! Or as Dan and our girl Cady Heron once said, “In the real world, Halloween is when kids dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In Girl World, Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress up like a total s**t and no other girls can say anything else about it.” So, which path will you take this Halloween?
