Tips for feeling confident while working out from a beginner turned fitness addict!

University gyms can be intimidating (The Nick at UW!!!) On one hand, you have access to state of the art equipment, but on the other you’re surrounded by gym bros (and gals) with no consideration for personal space and comfort level. It can be hard being a first time gym goer (or regular gym goer) when you don’t feel like a #fitnesslegend. As someone who went from fitness hater to someone who feels incomplete without a daily workout, here are my tips on how to beat gymtimidation.

1. Have a workout plan

Going into the gym without a plan can make you feel like you’re stuck in a maze. You don’t know where you’re starting, where you’re going, or what your goals are. Find fitness influencers online and choose workouts that are interesting to you. Personally, I love Chloe Ting. I’ve been able to find individual workouts that I incorporate into my routine.

2. Pick 2-3 cardio workouts and rotate them

It can be easy to stick to one machine but when you rotate you won’t get bored and you’ll see new parts of the gym! For me, cardio is a great “default.” When I feel like I’ve run out of strength training, I pick a cardio exercise. I love biking and running. The treadmill is a great option and the track at the Nick has the best view! Since the weather in Wisconsin has been nice, I like to run, bike or rollerblade outside!

3. Go to group fitness classes

Group fitness is the reason I fell in love with fitness in general. I started going to classes with motivating and inspiring instructors and suddenly fitness instructor was a dream job. Now, I go to 1-2 classes a day 5-6 times a week. I find it hard to pick a favorite because they all work my body in vastly different ways.

4. Buy one or two “cute” outfits

It sounds shallow but I am a believer that looking good makes you feel good! I like to have a pair of biker shorts, a cute gym top or sports bra, and a decent pair of leggings. Plus, they are a lot better in terms of sweat absorption than an old t-shirt.

5. Find a workout buddy

When you have one or two other people to join you, it makes getting motivated a lot easier. You can share workouts and practice strength in numbers! It makes group fitness a lot more fun too, especially when you pick motivated classes like zumba.

6. Set Personal Goals

This is the most important since it’s what gets you up for a 7 a.m. workout in the middle of winter. Your goals can be anything: building muscle, losing weight, gaining weight or just feeling healthy. It doesn’t matter! You know your body best so you know what your body needs. Don’t let anyone tell you what your goal should be!

The gym should be a place for everyone to feel comfortable but unfortunately there are still days where it feels daunting! Confidence is the most important thing. It is important to remember that you’re not alone in not feeling comfortable at the gym 100% of the time. Allowing yourself to understand what your body needs will help you reach your goals.
