Are you interested in living in the dorms at UW-Madison? If so, it’s important to understand the difference between the two main neighborhoods, Lakeshore and Southeast. Each has its perks, and its downsides, but either way, we’re sure you can call one of these neighborhoods your home away from home.
Lakeshore
- Located right on Lake Mendota, this can be a great place for nature lovers. There’s an abundance of green space for studying outside, playing volleyball and Frisbee, or just hanging out.
- Facilities such as the Natatorium and Steenbock Library are in the neighborhood. However, most classes are a decent walk away. If you’re not a fan of long walks and hate public transportation, consider either living in Southeast or getting a bike!
- It’s a pretty common to describe Lakeshore people as non-partiers, which may be true. It’s usually more quiet, but you can always find people who love to go out— after all, we are the number one party school in the nation.
Southeast
- If you’re into city living, Southeast is definitely for you. You can get a great view of the city and the campus just by looking outside your window. Expect a busy street as soon as you step outside your dorm.
- With city living comes proximity to State Street, the Capitol, the two Unions, and many academic buildings. You will still be walking around a lot, but you are much closer to many places now.
- With noise from the halls and the city, the neighborhood can quickly become very loud. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though! If you’re into up-paced atmospheres and vibrant social scenes, you’re in the right place.   Â
