How and Why I Have Avoided Spoilers to the Era’s Tour

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

I am prepared to make this concert a surprise

Since the moment I found out that I would be attending the Era’s Tour this summer, not once but twice, I was determined to make it so that I knew nothing about the setlist going into the tour. Though this mission has been difficult, as my entire social media feed has continuously been videos from the shows, I knew it was something I wanted to achieve so that when I walked into the concert, my mind would be totally blown. Being that I have been a Swiftie since childhood, I already know that regardless of what she plays I will know all of the words so there is no need for any preparation. Even though avoiding the tour setlist has been difficult and I have unfortunately learned a couple of the songs, it is definitely not the most difficult goal. For those who are in the same boat as me and want the setlist to stay a surprise, here are some of my tips on how I have avoided any spoilers.

First, and this one is simple enough, tell your other Swiftie fans way in advance that you want to know nothing and continue to emphasize that point. Many of my Swiftie friends have just started dropping song titles in conversation, causing me to (embarrassingly) close my ears and walk away from the conversation.By communicating with them in advance, many of these problems have been avoided. They all know not to send me videos and TikToks of the concert, and also to give me a warning or a heads-up before dropping a spoiler bomb in conversation. Just by communicating, I have continued to avoid spoilers in my day-to-day life, but being that social media poses the largest threat, in-person interactions are not that difficult.

As I previously stated, social media has been the most difficult platform to avoid spoilers. Just scrolling through TikTok, clicking on a friend’s private story, or looking on Instagram I have been bombarded with videos that capture many of Taylor’s performances and song choices. TikTok has turned into the most difficult platform to avoid spoilers, but with some of the tips I have learned, avoiding spoilers has gotten 10 times easier. First off, when I scroll through a video from the tour, my first step is to hit the “not interested” button at the bottom. By hitting this button, I have signaled to TikTok that I do not want to see any content associated with this topic. In a similar vein, I have also continued to avoid these videos by not liking any that have to do with Taylor Swift. With my “for you page” constantly dominated by videos related to or about Taylor, I now have almost no videos about her popping up, especially not tour.

In my experience, the most difficult days to avoid tour spoilers were during the first two shows of her tour. My feed was overloaded with content, and some of it was impossible to avoid. As the weeks have gone, I have seen and have been faced with less content. If you are like me and are desperately trying to avoid viewing any spoilers, I 100% recommend trying these tips if you have not already!
