How HC Wisco Stays Fit and Healthy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

Have you ever wondered how the HC-Wisco team stays fit and healthy during the semester? It can sometimes be a struggle to eat healthy and figure out ways to stay fit in college, but here are some ways we like to stay fit:

“I started to cook for myself using healthy ingredients. By cooking for myself I know what’s in my food. Plus, I save money since I’m not eating out all the time. I also try to run outside a few times a week! There are really nice paths around Madison, and I like running outside because I like nature— but sometimes it’s way too cold here to run outside.”

– Julia, Junior.

“My roommate and I started eating healthy together, so we both had someone to rely on for support! We started buying healthier versions of all of our favorite snacks. The ones that are fat free, light, etc.  We also eat out a lot less because we keep our fridge and pantry filled with healthy options.”

– Hannah, Sophomore

“I love going to the group fitness classes at the SERT and the NAT. Their Powerflow and HardCore classes are my favorite, but another fun one is Pound, which incorporates drumming on the floor with an entire leg and core workout. I started feeling more comfortable at the gym by going with my boyfriend, who taught me to use all the machines. Getting trained by someone when I was just starting out helped me become more confident when I go by myself and create workouts for myself. I personally can’t afford a membership at a nice fitness center, but I did take advantage of Dragonfly Yoga’s “first class free” so I could have fun trying something new with my workout.”

-Mckenzie, Sophomore

“I’ve been practicing yoga for about 3 years now, and there’s a really great class at Inner Fire Yoga called Sculpt. It basically incorporates yoga poses and sequences with weights, cardio, and energetic music. It’s such a good workout, and I always feel super relaxed afterwards!  There’s a deal on Groupon to get your first month for $29, so definitely check that out!”

– Lauren, Sophomore

“I run a few times a week, do “Ballet Beautiful” pilates and other toning YouTube videos, and sometimes use the machines at the SERF. I can’t do the same workout two days in a row—I always need to switch it up.”

– Daniela, Sophomore

“Spinning is my passion. There are a lot of classes offered at places like Cyc Fitness as well as at the SERF. I also love to just grab a spinning bike at the gym and construct my own routines. I love having a workout where music is so integrated to the action.”

– Kelsey, Senior

“I am mildly obsessed with yoga. I try to go to a sculpt class once or twice a week to get some cardio and build muscle. I also go to powerflow classes three to five times a week usually. When I’m not able to make it to yoga, I usually go to the Shell, which is totally underrated. I’ve also been more focused on eating clean, and I actually feel like a different person. Every time I read something about people feeling better from eating better, I wondered how much it actually helped. Now, I never want to look back. I have more energy. My mood is boosted. And I don’t really crave greasy or processed foods at all.”

– Taylor, Senior
