How To Wear: Cutout Dresses

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

Students studying on Bascom, boys playing basketball on the courts, NOT having to wear a parka…it’s finally here! Spring has arrived and so has the time for more revealing styles – in moderation that is. Cut-out dresses are a fun and flirty look that can be super cute if worn the right way. Never has “less is more” applied, though. I can’t stress enough how important it is to pick one area of your body to highlight with the cutouts. Too much skin and you’ll be looking like a hot mess.

Here’s a few general rules to keep in mind when looking for a dress with cutouts. First, pick a dress that shows only one area and make sure it’s an area you’re confident with. I personally love cutouts on the back. There’s something feminine and mysterious about revealing a peek at your back. Second, keep in mind the occasion you’re wearing it for. Obviously some cut out dresses are more appropriate for certain events. The style only succeeds when you’re tasteful. Last but not least, stick to smaller displays of skin. If the dress is short, make sure the cutouts are small or covered in mesh/lace. If the back is open, stay away from more cut outs on the side. And if the neckline is deep, try not to show too many other areas of your body. Less is more, less is more ladies. You don’t want your dress looking like Edward Scissorhands made it.

Here are some of my favorite cutout styles for the spring weather! Stay classy!

It's my first year at UW-Madison and I couldn't be happier. With school, friends, writing, tweeting, pinning, online shopping, eating, drinking coffee, sleeping, LAUGHING, and loving - life is bueno. And, I mean, I create outfits and write about them on one of the greatest websites for college ladies. How could it get any better?
