Looks for Less: Layering

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

One could (and should) definitely say that was weather outside is frightful, and since most of us don’t have fires to call “delightful” let me give you three easy tips for staying warm.

1. Layer

This may seem like an obvious one, but I want you to get creative and use what you own.

Leather jackets are in right now, and it’s easy to find a quality faux leather jacket that keeps the wind out. Picking a softer color like white will not only make your jacket seem more feminine, but it’ll set you apart from all the brown and black jackets out there.

Now before you put on your stunning jacket, slip on a warm hoodie. This will keep you extra warm for those long walks.  Old Navy has lined faux fur hoodies or just basic fleece ones for under $25.

To keep your legs warm under thin jeans or sweat pants wear a warm pair of leggings or tights. Ebay has especially cheap fleece lined tights in all different colors.

2.  Footwear

I’m not necessarily suggesting UGGs, but I know 90%of us wear them or want to. Of course getting suede boots wet destroys them, and with all the slush in Madison water repellent spray may not be enough to protect your boots.

So before you go spending over $100 on a pair of boots that may not survive the winter, look at other options. Sam’s Club has a wonderful knock off pair that I recommend for only $37.

On snowy or especially wet days do not wear your suede boots. Your feet will be soaked, you will be cold, you will be sad, and you will have wrecked your boots. Instead look for waterproof winter boots. These will be harder to find cheap, but they’ll save your shoes and your feet.

If you find a nice pair, but they aren’t warm enough add a pair of wool or fuzzy socks to them. As a former employee of Old Navy, I can tell you there are certain days these socks go on mega sale, so look out for them and stock up.

3. Accessorize

Mittens are your friend. Not gloves. Mittens. You’ll be shocked at how much warmer your hands stay with all your fingers close by. Body heat is your friend!

For those of you who still want to text while they walk a nice alternative is flip top mittens.

Since wearing ski masks may get you arrested, try hiding your lower face in a chunky scarf instead. A bright colored scarf will really make your face pop and help you stand out in a sea of black and brown jackets.

There you have it, three easy tips to keep you from burning cash to stay warm this winter.
