Over the years, I have found myself admiring eyelash extensions on social media. I could not get over the idea of waking up to flawless eyelashes every morning and having it require no work. After sitting on the thought for a while, I decided to go for it and splurge on a set of eyelash extensions this summer. Although I was hesitant on the process ruining my eyelashes, I went through with it anyway. I have since come to learn that there are many pros and cons of getting eyelash extensions; here are some of my major takeaways from the experience.Â
They take time and moneyÂ
The process of getting eyelash extensions is both time-consuming and money-consuming. The initial appointment can take anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours. On top of this, fills are recommended every two weeks to ensure that there are no awkward gaps in your eyelashes. Having to make lengthy appointments so frequently not only puts a dent in your schedule, but in your wallet as well. A full set of eyelashes usually costs over $100, with fills being a little less depending on the state of your eyelashes. Therefore, when considering getting extensions, it is important to recognize the high level of maintenance required to keep them looking flawless.Â
You will have a quicker morning routineÂ
I think most people can agree that sleeping in is one of the best feelings. If you are someone who spends excessive amounts of time getting ready in the morning, then eyelash extensions would be extremely beneficial. When I had my extensions, I would wake up in the morning and instantly feel better about myself. It’s crazy how much something as simple as eyelashes can impact someone’s confidence. Not only did extensions shorten my morning routine, but my nighttime routine as well. Since I was able to put mascara aside, I did not have to take off as much makeup at night. Let’s be real: we all know taking off makeup at night can be a struggle. So, if you’re looking for a more simple and quick routine, extensions are definitely the route to go.Â
Research is crucialÂ
One of the very important factors that’s often overlooked is determining where to get your extensions done. Most times we want to go with the cheapest option, but when it comes to the health of your eyelashes, that is not the move. Coming from a small town, I was faced with very few options for eyelash extensions. I found a place that I heard good things about, but I never looked at pictures of their work. Extensions are very easy to mess up, so it is critical to find out as much information as possible prior to your appointment. This can be the difference between healthy and damaged eyelashes.Â
Damage is possibleÂ
Damaging my natural eyelashes is something I feared the most going into my eyelash extensions. When done properly, eyelash extensions will not damage your eyelashes. However, if they are applied wrong or if you do not take good care of them, it is possible to cause lots of damage. Unfortunately, I wasn’t so lucky. The person who did my lashes used way too much glue, which in the end affected my natural eyelashes greatly. Like mentioned before, doing research prior to getting your extensions is crucial. Eyelashes take a long time to grow back — but using oils to help them grow can speed up the process.Â
They look really goodÂ
Aside from all the pros and cons of eyelash extensions, there is one thing you can’t deny — they look really good. Even when my lashes were coated with too much glue, I couldn’t complain about how they looked. In fact, if I never would’ve gone to a different salon, I probably wouldn’t have found out that they were done improperly. Achieving long and thick lashes is something many strive for and having eyelash extensions makes this dream become a reality.
Overall, eyelash extensions have many positives and negatives associated with them. They take a lot of time, money and there is always a risk of damage. However, if they are done correctly, getting extensions can be a relaxing, enjoyable process that boosts your confidence immensely. I genuinely loved having eyelash extensions, and I would get them again in a heartbeat. They made getting ready a lot easier, and altogether made me feel really good from the second I woke up in the morning. My biggest mistake was settling for a salon without doing much investigating, which I paid for with damage to my natural lashes. However, if you make sure the salon is really good at what they do, eyelash extensions can be an amazing experience.Â
