I thought crazy spring break scenes only existed in the movies…that is until I found myself on South Padre Island for my own spring break. The endless sun and parties made this trip one of the best I’ve ever been on.
Day 1
Spring break may be fun, but the 26-hour car ride sure isn’t. They say that everything is bigger in Texas, and on this trip I learned that that is especially true of the state itself.
Day 2
Palm trees, sun and tons of Badgers. There was nothing better on the first day than being surrounded by red at a local bar and cheering the Badgers on to the Sweet Sixteen. At night we were the rookies at the big pool party and forgot to wear suits and wore white t-shits instead (oops).
Day 3
On day three I learned that spring break beach bashes are the ultimate darties. Numerous injuries were acquired by attempting to jump on stage, but that was nothing that a little liquid couldn’t fix. That night we headed to a bar party complete with fire, confetti and overpriced drinks.
Day 4
Hangovers were real so we camped out by the pool. The footballs being thrown, 50 Cent playing and assortment of light beers made me really feel like I was at a college spring break. That night we did the pool party right. Being thrown up and short stints of dancing on stage (sorry mom), were the best memories I actually have from break.
Day 5
On our last full day we found out that it was actually possible to get in trouble on spring break. After a few morning altercations we rallied like true UW students, headed to Lil Jon and turned down for nothing — even the terrible afternoon hangover.
Day 6
And on the sixth day… we woke up with withdrawal symptoms and hit the road once again, memories, or lack-there-of, in tow.
I never thought that spending over two days in a car was worth it for much of anything until I spent spring break in South Padre. I came back more thankful than ever for the friends I traveled with and my Madison-built tolerance.
