Why Retail Therapy is Crucial for Students
As announced in March of 2021, the building of a 15,000 square foot Target was planned to be fully constructed towards the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year in downtown Madison. It is located in the sweet spot of 610 State Street, steps away from The University Bookstore, right and just across from State Street Brats. As it sits close to Langdon Street and is only a short walk away from Library Mall, it’s already marked itself as a necessity for UW students.
My first experience at this Target was the day after it opened on October 20, 2021. I walked in blindly that day, and it blew away my expectations. It has all the essentials a student may need, from fresh produce, school supplies, medicine, to home essentials. It has personally made it a lot easier for me to pick up these things I need on my way home from class, when before I had to catch a bus and take it 15 minutes to Hilldale Mall. Not only has this university Target made essentials more convenient for students, but it’s also made little luxuries available to us too.
The only thing this Target doesn’t offer much of is their notorious “cheap chic” clothing line. Though this may be keeping most of my paycheck safe, I firmly believe that the retail therapy this store will provide students will be equally as essential for students as the body and food products they carry. Aside from the lack of clothing, this Target offers many other fun things that you can pick up to bring a little joy into your day.
Referring back to my first trip, the main thing I went in for was to buy new fall candles. As small and cliche as this may sound, I felt really excited after my purchase. I was able to forget about my homework and exams for a few minutes and come home excited to light them for the first time. After I lit them, I felt more at ease and motivated to do homework. It was a small moment in my day that made a large impact on my focus.
I think that the addition of the State Street Target was crucial, and will impact the student body in a positive way. Whatever your go-to retail therapy item is, the new Target is sure to do the trick. I am so grateful for this addition. Now all we need is a Culver’s.
