What to Wear When Mother Nature Doesn’t Know Which Season It Is

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

Ah, spring— new beginnings and promises of warm weather. There’s no better feeling than finally feeling temperatures above freezing and the warmth of the sun on your face. But these moments are only fleeting when it comes to spring in Wisconsin. One day it’s 70 & sunny, and by the next day it’s 30 & snowing. I know we’re all thinking: What the heck am I supposed to wear?! Here’s a guide for all your tough outfit questions.

Layers on Layers

Layers will always be the answer. The more layers you have on, the more you can take off throughout the day.  Sure, it may be 30 degrees outside when you go to class, but after class it may be sunny & 50. Without your layers, you’re going to hate yourself with every step you take in the sun— you’re all bundled up in your winter jacket. A light jacket works with best with sweaters and long sleeves under.

Invest in a Vest

Vests make for an interesting concept because they are built to keep your torso warm but not your arms. A vest is the best investment one can make for spring in Wisconsin. The little extra layer will keep you warm, but not as warm as a heavy winter jacket. The vest is also a bonus, because if you get too warm, you can always just take it off and still have a lighter jacket under it!

Break out the Shades

It may seem silly wearing sunglasses when it’s 30 degrees out, but nothing makes it feel a little more like spring than finally breaking out the shades. Plus, sunglasses are a great shield for your eyes when we get those crazy windy days here in Madison.

Mix Summer & Winter

Sure, the temperatures may be in the 30s, but it is still technically spring— warm temperatures will be on their way soon! The best way to welcome this change is to make use out of your springy tank tops and tops. You can do this by wearing your favorite spring tank with one of your winter cardigans! You’ll still be supporting the cheery effects of spring while staying warm at the same time!

Ditch the Leggings

Nothing will make you seem more like you’re stuck in the winter than continuously wearing your leggings (*see here*). Sure, they’re comfy, but they also scream winter. Break out the jeans that have been tucked away in your closet all winter! I can assure you, it’ll start to feel more like spring! Not only that, jeans are also a little warmer than leggings, which pair perfectly with blustery spring days. It may be a hard breakup at first, but it’ll all be worth it in the end.

Hopefully this guide will serve a short purpose and that permanent warm temperatures will be an imminent thing in the near future. Until then, stay warm & stylish!
