When to Say Goodbye to Summer and Hello to Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

It’s the time of year again for chilly afternoons with Pumpkin Spice Lattes and the gorgeous colors on the trees, but the best part would definitely be the fall clothes. Jeans, boots, sweaters and countless other fall essentials that make fashionistas positively giddy at the thought of actually being able to show their fashion without having to cover up with a bulky winter jacket, or overheat with high temperatures. While this is a great time of year, it can be a little unclear as to when it is appropriate to break out these clothes. You don’t want to be that girl working her Ugg boots in a mid-September heat wave when everyone else is dressed in shorts and tank tops.

Here are the things you should keep in mind when trying to decide if it’s the time for fall clothes.

  1. WEATHER: If you need to have the A.C. on, chances are it’s not the boots and sweater weather you’re hoping for. You don’t want to be uncomfortable as soon as you step outside because you realize you should’ve taken off 3 layers before you left. Pay attention to the forecast, dress for the weather!
  2. TIME OF THE MONTH: No, I’m not talking about that time of month, but just the time of month in general. The gorgeous rich colors of fall can look a little out of place at the beginning of September, so even if the weather is right, you should probably hold off on those colors at least until the middle of September. They can be fall-colored summer clothes if it’s warm outside, but if it’s typical fall weather, then opt for the usual fall wear. Also, you can still pull off bright colors throughout the whole year, just downplay them appropriately according to the time of year.
  3. PRACTICALITY: Make sure the material you’re wearing makes sense. Chunky, cable-knit sweaters do not really have a place in September and lightweight cotton probably doesn’t really work in November.

Here’s a monthly guide for what to wear:

SEPTEMBER: In early September, work those summer clothes! Most likely the weather is still warm enough to wear dresses that show your summer bronze. In mid-to-end September, break out the fall colors and depending on the weather, other fall essentials.

OCTOBER: Most likely it’s cooler by now, so go ahead and wear your new boots. You can also try taking a summer dress and wearing it with tights and a light jacket. This month is the perfect time to show off your fall fashion without looking out of place. Just keep the weather in mind.

NOVEMBER: Now it gets cold, and it’s probably almost time to break out the winter clothes, which is slightly unfortunate. But on a positive note, Christmas is just around the corner.

It’s all about what makes you comfortable keeping in mind the temperature and technically what season you might be in. Good luck and happy fall!
