Behind the Seams: Alta Gracia at William & Mary

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WM chapter.

Are you a freshman who has yet to purchase that William & Mary sweatshirt at the bookstore? Or maybe you’re an upperclassmen looking to show some more Tribe pride?  Whatever the reason, if you’re stocking up on school apparel, remember to read the label and support the Alta Gracia brand.

Alta Gracia has a selection of styles that are both well-designed and fairly manufactured. Year after year, American industries exploit sweatshop labor to lower production costs and boost profits. But in the Dominican Republic, Alta Gracia Apparel is proving that businesses can pay their workers a “living wage,” while still bringing in revenue. With this living wage, workers can provide for their families, afford education, and pay for healthcare costs.

As a college student, it’s hard to put yourself in the shoes of these workers. But imagine yourself in a developing country, where the poverty is already high and a decent workplace is rare. Alta Gracia is an opportunity to earn over three times the standard wage, gain union representation, and work in humane conditions every day.

So next time you find yourself in the bookstore, consider the difference you can make with your purchase. True, that t-shirt may cost an extra dollar or two, but by putting your money towards an Alta Gracia product, you are making a sizable impact in the lives of workers already facing poverty.  I would say that’s a clear Tribe choice.

Here are a few of the Alta Gracia styles offered at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore:
