Behind the Seams: How To Be a Successful Thrifter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WM chapter.

Looking for some chic and affordable additions to your wardrobe? Thrift or consignment stores are ideal for finding great options on a college student’s budget. Not only is purchasing second-hand clothing much cheaper, it is also an environmentally friendly way to recycle past trends.

But thrift shopping is also not for the weak of heart, and many students become discouraged at the thought of rummaging through stores with their busy schedules. But with these suggestions, you, too, can come across some great finds at bargain prices.

1. Set aside ample time and shop with a friend. It takes some time to browse through the racks and, although stores tend to color code items, it can become frustrating. Be patient and take a friend along for some entertainment and a second opinion.

2. Don’t go in with expectations. If you are set on buying that floral crop top or those denim cutoffs, a thrift store is not the place. Typically, you won’t find exactly what you’re looking for, but you will come out with some surprise finds.

3. Check for quality. Remember that these clothes are second hand, so it’s always important to look for tears or damage. You should also read any tags to learn more about the quality of the material. Although you will be buying clothes at a discounted price, it’s still important to make sure that they will last.

4. Try everything on. As with any other shopping trip, use the fitting rooms to see if an item that looks great on the hanger translates well to your figure. This is where your friend’s opinions come in to play, too!

5. Remember that you can always get things tailored. With the money you’ve already saved, you can spare a little extra to get items fitted for your frame. This can be more of a hassle, but will result in a one-of-kind piece you will love to wear.

Remember sometimes you’ll leave empty handed, but be persistent! If you are interested in trying out these tips, here are a few thrift stores near campus:
