What organizations are you involved in on campus? Â I work for the Department of Residence Life as a Head Resident in Barrett (although I spent my last 3 years in the great Yates Hall!) and for the WM Catering Department. I also am a Co-Director of Lafayette Kids, a tutoring and mentoring organization.
What gave you the inspiration to start Lafayette Kids? Â After being sent to Lafayette Village, a subsidized housing community in Williamsburg, on SHOW day of freshman orientation, I started volunteering there regularly with a few other WM students for the rest of the year. There was a clear opportunity for WM to have a greater and more consistent role in their after-school program, so I teamed up with some fantastic other students to make that happen. We are still redeveloping the program each semester to best fit the needs of the students at LV, but it has been awesome to be part of our growth so far!
What has been the most valuable thing you’ve taken out of your time here at William & Mary? Â How to use self-knowledge, empathy, and agency to best understand your place in the world and the power you have to change it.
What do you plan on doing after graduation? Â I will pursue my interest in urban education inequality, but I am still searching for the best way to get involved.
If you could improve one thing about the College or the Williamsburg community, what would it be and why? Â I would love to see more courses about education offered in different disciplines or even a full Education Studies minor. There are so many students interested in entering the field, as teachers or through other important avenues like policy or psychology, who could benefit from a centralized department.
