Off Campus Dining: Eat This, Not That

I think it is safe to say that the W&M student body does not salivate over the thought of eating on-campus food. Needless to say, the dining halls such as The Caf, with its large selection; Marketplace, with its variety of food stations; and Sadler with its “hit or miss” food options, have their good days here and there. However, when presented with the opportunity, I’m sure students jump at the opportunity to eat off-campus food, especially if they live on-campus. As someone who enjoys the fine dining of local restaurant options while wanting to make healthy and wise food choices, I took it upon myself to do some “research” of the best things to eat around the Williamsburg area. Here’s some dining “must knows” according to the 2011 Edition of Eat This, Not That.

No. 16 Worst Side: Five Guys Large Fries

  • 1,464 calories, 71g fat, (14g saturated), 184g carbs

No. 15 Worst Hybrid Food: Domino’s Chicken Carbonara Breadbowl Pasta

  • 1,480 calories, 56g fat (24 g saturated), 2,220 mg sodium 

Eat This, Not That!

Chipotle

  • Eat This: Steak Burrito Bowl, Crispy Chicken Tacos
  • No That: Chicken Soft Tacos, Chicken Salad, Chips

Coldstone Creamery

  • Eat This: Oreo Crème Ice Cream Sandwich, Cake Batter Ice Cream, Sinless Sans Fat Sweet Cream (w/ sugar cone) , Strawberry Bananza Low-Cal Smoothie
  • Not That: Sinless Cake ‘n Shake Milk Shake, French Vanilla Ice Cream (w/ cookie dough and a waffle cone), Savory Strawberry Shake

Domino’s Pizza

  • Eat This: Chicken Bacon and Roasted Pepper Pizza (2 slices), Deluxe Feast Pizza (two slices, hand tossed), Buffalo Chicken Kickers (6), Chicken and Green Pepper Pizza (2 slices, thin crust)
  • Not That: Chicken Bacon Ranch Sandwich, Cali Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza (2 slices, hand tossed), Buffalo BBG Wings (6)

Dunkin’ Donuts

  • Eat This: Egg and Cheese Wake Up Wraps, Chocolate Frosted Donut, Turkey Cheddar and Bacon Flatbread, Small Cappuccino
  • Not That: Sesame Bagel (w/ reduced fat cream cheese, Tuna Melt Sandwich, Small Dunkaccino

Five Guys

  • Eat This: Little Cheesburger, Little Hamburger, BLT
  • Not That: Cheesburger, Cheese Dog, Hamburger

Panera Bread

  • Eat This: Breakfast Power Sandwich, Smoked Turkey Breast Sandwich on Sourdough, Strawberry Poppyseed Salad, Caffee Latte
  • Not That: Grilled Bacon Egg and Cheese Sandwich, Chipotle Chicken Sandwich on Artisan French Bread, Tomato and Mozzarella Salad, Caffee Mocha

Subway

  • Eat This: Steak Egg and Cheese Muffin Melts, Subway Melt (6 inch), Steak and Cheese (6 inch)
  • Not That: Meatball Marinara w/ Provolone (6 inch), Spicy Italian (6 inch)

So, the next time you are looking to indulge in some delicious off-campus food nearby, you’ll not only get to enjoy the luxury of “real” food but you also won’t have anything to feel guilty about now that you know foods to eat and avoid.
