The indie folk movement is experiencing major success in today’s music industry. Starting with Mumford and Sons’ explosive emergence to the music scene in 2009 with their album, Sigh No More, the genre has snowballed into a full-force tsunami of banjoes and stomping with the likes of The Avett Brothers, The Head and the Heart, Fleet Foxes, The Lumineers, Band of Horses, The Civil Wars, Tallest Man on the Earth, and more. The latest band to join this conglomeration of soulful lyrics and twangy chords, The Lone Bellow, is not one to be ignored.
With the release of their self-titled first album on January 22nd, The Lone Bellow has fast risen to musical fame. With songs that are reminiscent of Mumford and Sons’ bold chords and rhythms, harmonies resembling those of The Civil Wars, and a hollow passion akin to that of the Lumineers, the band combines the best of the already existing folk indie scene with their own personal flair.
Each song is riddled with a variety of emotion formed around life-shaping stories about love, loss, pain, and change. The band’s website (thelonebellow.com) states that the song “Teach Me to Know” was written by their front man, Zach Williams, when his wife had a near-paralyzing horseback riding accident. Despite the dark undercurrents, the songs remain primarily upbeat and optimistic, aided by the string and percussion that is essential to the genre which The Lone Bellow embodies so well.
Aided in their rise to fame by The Civil Wars’ producer, Charlie Peacock, the band will embark on a tour starting March 22nd in New York City and will travel through the US and Canada, stopping in Richmond on April 15th and D.C. on April 17th. They will return to Richmond on May 10th before heading to the west coast. Tickets are on sale now.
The band’s music is difficult to capture in print. To experience an emotion that can only be translated through harmony and chords, check out some of The Lone Bellow’s most popular tunes below.
