With Orientation at full force, there are a few things you should have with you at all times to make sure you have an awesome time, get to know the girls on your hall, make new friends and stay cool in the summer heat.
Â
1. A cell phone – this is probably one of the most important things to keep with you at all times. Exchanging numbers is great when you meet someone new you’d like to hang out with later, because then you have the option to call or text each other to make plans. It’s also a good idea to get your OA’s numbers in case you get separated from the group or if you need directions.
Â
2. A water bottle – this is one of the most important things to have with you during Orientation. You’ll be outdoors a lot and it can get really hot. You want to stay hydrated so that you can enjoy your experience to the fullest.
Â
3. Schedule – You definitely want to keep your Orientation schedule with you. Last year when I went through Orientation, my hall mates and I always wanted to know what kind of fun we were going to have next. When you have the schedule, you’ll be the most popular girl on your hall!
Â
4. Sunglasses – this is kind of like the water bottle, and is something you’ll want to have because you’ll be outdoors so much. Hope fully your week will be sunny and hot, and with the bright sun beating down on you, you’ll want to protect your eyes and clear the glare so you can get the big picture and the details.
Â
5. Your green backpack – the green backpack you receive when you first arrive on campus is the best thing! It’s a basic drawstring bag that’s great for keeping all your essentials in. You’ll become very attached to it after you’ve carried it around all week, and it’ll bring back all your great Orientation memories every time you come across it.
Â
And last but not least…
Â
6. An open mind and a positive attitude – Orientation is one of the most fun, exciting times you will have during freshman year. You’ll make tons of new friends, bond with your hall and learn the ropes from your OAs. You’ll become familiar with campus and meet people from other halls around campus during scheduled “mixers”. If you stay happy, tolerate the heat and shun homesickness, you will have a wonderful time and blend seamlessly into life on campus.

I hope these pointers help you enjoy the last bits of Orientation! Welcome to William & Mary!
