Want to give your ballet flats a new look? Which one? There are so many different styles for ballet flats. I’ll show you some ideas and how to spruce up a pair or two of flats. For my first pair of shoes I did an embellished toe cap.
What you need: a pair of flats or other shoes you want to give new life to; E6000 glue (remember when using you should be in a well ventilated area); studs (I bought the iron on kind) Q-tips (and I would lay down newspaper, this can get a little messy).
Squirt your E6000 glue out on your newspaper, or an index card. Take your Q-tips and dab the glue onto the back of your studs. Use enough so the studs will stick but not so much that when you press the studs on your shoe glue squirts out.
To make sure you get the shape of the toe cap, you can but tape on both your shoes so you get a strait line. Slowly add the studs. I recommend doing one shoe at a time.
You are done! Quick and easy way to give your shoes a new look!
My second pair of shoes I added lace to a plain pair of flats that I have.
What you need: a pair of flats (I recommend using a plain pair); lace (try to get a color that stands out from the color of your flats); a foam brush (you might want to get two); Mod Podge for fabric (Mod Podge makes a special one for just fabric); scissors and newspaper (this project is a messy one). I would also suggest getting water repellent spray for shoes, as it will add an extra layer of protection to your shoes.
Lay the lace over one of your shoes and cut around it to get a rough idea of how much lace you need.
Cut a strait line in the middle of the lace. The line should go to the front and the back of the inner part of your shoe.
Take your foam brush and spread a layer of Mod Podge over your shoe.
Press the lace on your shoe. Make sure the line you cut still lines up with the inner sole of your shoe.
When you get to the back of your shoe, pull the extra lace out from your shoe. Cut this off; you should leave enough so you can glue both ends of lace together on your shoe.
Using your foam brush, paint another layer of Mod Podge on your shoe. Don’t worry about the excess lace gathered at the bottom of your shoe, or the excess lace covering the shoes’ opening.
and
After letting your shoe dry for about a day and take your scissors and start cutting the excess lace off around your shoe. Try and get as close as you can to the sole.
Paint another layer of Mod Podge on your shoes. Make sure all of your lace edges are sealed to your shoe.
Spray your shoes with a water repellent spray. I strongly recommend you spray your shoes, this will improve the life of your shoes, especially because you are using Mod Podge which is water based.
All done, and now you have a fabulous new pair of shoes to wear!
My last shoe makeover with bows! I absolutely love bows! They can look feminine, elegant, and make a statement! It doesn’t surprise me that bows have been so popular for many years.
What you need: a pair of shoes (I’m using my new lacey one); ribbon (make sure it’s fabric, and try not to use ribbon with tire in it); E6000 glue: binder clips; a ruler; scissors; something you can lay down (I used a piece of white cardboard).
First you need to cut two 10 inch pieces of ribbon. Now with one of your pieces of ribbon make it into something similar to the breast cancer ribbons, by folding the two ends over each other. Now take a dab of E6000 glue and put it on one of the pieces of ribbon, putting the other piece of ribbon over it and using a binder clip to secure it. Do this to the other piece of ribbon, then wait about half an hour.
and
Take the binder clip off, and put another dab of glue on the middle of the ribbon and press the crossed piece of ribbon on the glue. Hold and secure with another binder clip. Do this to the other piece of ribbon, and wait another half an hour.
Take the binder clips off, and you have made two beautiful bows! Add another dab of glue to the back of both bows and place them on the front of your flats.
You have completed, a lovely, simple makeover on flats. A bow can make a huge difference!
If you’re really into glitter, and you want a glitter pair of flats or you want to add glitter toe caps to your shoes, I recommend using the Fabric Mod Podge.
Paint your shoe with it, then sprinkle on Tulip Fashion Glitter.
Wait about a day for it to dry. Then paint another coat of Fabric Mod Podge. Let it dry a day again. Then spray a coat of water repellent spray over your shoes.
You can also use Tulip Glitter Bond. To use this, paint a coat of Tulip Glitter Bond on your shoes, and then sprinkle Tulip Fashion Glitter on your shoes. Wait two hours for it to dry. Then spray your shoes with water repellent spray.
If you want to just add a toe cap to your shoes, follow all the steps I gave, but before you begin take painters tape and tape off the front of your shoe. Make sure both shoes have been taped off equally. When you’re applying the glitter to your shoes try to avoid getting any of the Fabric Modge Podge or Tulip Glitter Bond on the painters tape. When your glitter toe cap has dried slowly peel off the painters tape. Be VERY carful, sometimes if you get too much Fabric Mod Podge or Tulip Glitter Bond on the painters tape it will pull some of your toe cap off. So again be very careful, if you notice the tape is starting to pull off your toe cap take a sharp knife and slowly cut the painters tape from the glitter toe cap. I would also recommend spraying water repellent spray on your toe, or you can do your whole shoe.
If you want to create a pattern on you shoes there are several ways you can do it. For polka dots, I would recommend using canvas flats. Take Tulip Soft Fabric paint and a pencil with a never been used eraser. Use the paint and eraser to stamp your shoes all over with polka dots. When you finish, I suggest spraying your shoes with water repellent spray.
For other patterns you can buy fabric with the pattern you want on it, like floral or chevron. You can use Fabric Mod Podge, and use the same method I used for the lace flats. As always, I recommend spraying your flats with water repellent spray.
If you want to do a solid toe cap, I would use spray paint. First tape off your toe cap area with painters tape. You may also want to tape newspaper on any part of the shoe that’s not the toe cap. Then take your shoes out side with newspaper and spray paint. Spray away. Make sure not to get any runs, by getting the spray paint too close to your shoe. If one coat doesn’t cover the toe cap well, paint another coat in 24 hours. I would also recommend spraying your shoe or toe cap with water repellent spray or acrylic spray paint sealer. Only use acrylic spray paint sealer on spray painted areas, NO where else.
I hope I have inspired you to give a make over to a pair of your shoes! There are so many different styles of flats you can explore, so go out and find a new identity for your shoes!
