5 Tips for Being A Successful Music Major

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WPUNJ chapter.

Being a music major in college comes with a lot of unique experiences and responsibilities. Your college experience will differ greatly from that of your non-music major peers, but that is not a bad thing! If you want to make the best out of your education, read these five important tips on being a successful music student.

Get a metronome

Keeping a steady beat is paramount to the success of any good musician. If you can’t commit to a rhythm and you don’t learn how to count, you surely won’t measure up to the rest of your ensemble, and you will inevitably stand out.

Establish a practicing schedule

We all know that college can become incredibly hectic, and fitting practice time into your schedule can be tough. However, it needs to be done, or else you will fall behind. Whether or not if it’s for class, band, or just personal growth, engaging with your music only once a week is a disservice to you. You will be happy with how much and how quickly you improve if you practice regularly.

Seek help if needed

Music Theory and Ear Training are cumulative courses. This means that each following section is going to be built upon the previous one. If you are struggling with Music Theory I and Ear Training I, seek help! In addition, if you are having a hard time with a piece in your ensemble, enlist the help of someone else. It won’t get any easier if you don’t consult a classmate, a tutor, or your professor.

Immerse yourself in your local music community

All of your inspiration doesn’t necessarily have to come from within. Explore the music scene in your area, catch some shows, and connect with local artists. You could be introduced to a community of other musicians like yourself, which will greatly broaden your perspective on music culture. You may find collaborators or connections that will help you with your career later down the line. Even if you don’t befriend anyone, at least you will probably discover some really good bands along the way.

Breathe and relax

Chill out! It’s just college. You’re here to learn, but you always have to make sure that you have fun. Listen to music that inspires you to not only improve on your instrument but also to succeed in your life. Hang out with your friends, go to events, and make sure you don’t get too lost between band practice and piano class.

If you ever find yourself in treble, then just refer back to this list and you will be just fine.
