Brave New Radio is an accomplished radio station with more exciting things to come.
A local broadcast radio station here in William Paterson University, Wayne, New Jersey has served us with music, awesome personalities, and fresh programs all year round.
They’ve been nominated for ten Marconi Awards and won four.
Fall 2022 has been no different for them.
Communications Professor Robert Quicke created “College Radio Day” as a celebration of college radio stations across the world as a place where students can express their passions, talents, and stories alike.
This years’ theme was “Voices for Peace” with Julian Lennon serving as the ambassador.
The White House sent a letter to him congratulating him on the event and acknowledging the significance young people have in radio.
Nick Wilkerson was invited along with many college students to the White House representing their college radio station. And speaking with Vice President Kamala Harris about the significance our generation has with radio and media. And why this means so much, now more than ever.
“Honestly, it means the world you know being able to walk into the White House at such an important place was so much important. And historical things have happened it’s really moving for me. You know two or three generations ago my family wouldn’t have been able to drink the same water fountain as a White person. Now I was able to present myself and meet the Vice President it was a surreal moment.”
He gushed about how Professor Quicke has been an amazing mentor to him as the General Manager for Brave New Radio. He learned a lot of useful information from him in terms of his career path and even talks to him on the phone when he needs advice.
Nick Wilkerson wants to be as diverse in his career in media as possible through radio, television, film, and writing and his experiences definitely showcase that.
But success and recognition don’t occur overnight, Nick stated if you’re a part of Brave New Radio, you’re familiar with the gruesome long hours, late nights, and early mornings that are put in to make a great show. For this years’ College Radio Day, everyone went on the air for twenty-four hours. But he says they’re completely worth it.
“Well it’s because we’re the #1 College Radio Station in the country first of all. But also I think that not only is our music unique because there’s no other station that plays alt hip-hop music like we do. But also our shows are amazing.
Brave New Radio has “The Pregame” hosted by Nick Wilkerson and Hava Senman, “Morning Commute” by Justyn Chapman and Vont Leak, “Shuffle Play” by Justin Reynoso-Dume and many more.
You can listen to Brave New Radio on GoBrave.org, the iHeartRadio app, Radio FX, and the TuneIn app.
