Since the pandemic began, my online shopping obsession has grown immensely. Nowadays, thrifting is the latest trend. There are so many second-hand online clothing sites and apps that I’ve discovered, and these sites have become my main source of shopping. Not only is second-hand shopping more sustainable for the environment, but it’s also a great way to find super unique clothing pieces and accessories. When it comes to environmental problems with fashion, the term “Fast Fashion” refers to the overproduction of clothes to keep up with the latest trends.
Clothing stores tend to buy or sell clothing pieces at a low cost for consumers to continuously buy more. However, the cycle becomes dangerous when companies continuously overproduce clothing and eventually end up wasting a majority of it. The clothing waste leads to more pollution and negative effects on the environment, which is why I try to shop sustainably as often as I can! Here are some of my top sites for second-hand shopping!
ThredUP
ThredUP is an online consignment/thrift store that provides a multitude of different styles from several well-known brands including H&M, Madewell, Forever 21, Steve Madden and more! ThredUP is not like your typical shopping site where you can type in specific details of the items you’re looking for. Instead, it’s much easier to type one or two words to describe the clothing you’re looking for such as “cardigan” or “jeans”. Then from there, you can filter each category of the item from size, color, brand, etc. It may take some time to find exactly what you’re looking for, but along the way you can find unique pieces you weren’t originally seeking out!
I’ve purchased from ThredUP multiple times and the items have become some of my favorite pieces in my closet! When buying on there, the listing of each item will provide measurements and descriptions of the items as well as any flaws the item may have. The most beneficial factor of shopping on ThredUP is the highly discounted prices! You can find clothing or accessories from high end brands like Michael Kors or Coach for up to 90% off the original selling price.
Depop & Poshmark
Depop is another app where you can buy and sell clothes from other sellers! This site allows you to create your own pricing on items and chat with other sellers! Each listing should include a description of the item being sold. Including hashtags as they are important for buyers to find your listings! I personally sell on depop myself and it’s great and easy to use! Depop makes it easy to find super unique, vintage pieces. Some of my personal favorites in my closet are from Depop! Depop is a great platform for sellers to post their handmade items. I’ve purchased handmade jewelry, crochet hats, and sweaters from some really talented people!
Poshmark is another app similar to depop! It’s very easy to use and makes it simple for buyers and sellers to communicate with each other. Anyone can buy or sell fashion, home decor, beauty and more!
Ebay
Although, Ebay is typically used to find new or used technology, parts, equipment, etc., you’d be surprised to see what other things you can find that are both affordable and second-hand! Ebay allows buyers to bid on items and negotiate pricing. It is a great platform to use and offers a huge selection of unique items.
Making the switch to shopping almost entirely second-hand has helped me find some of my favorite clothing pieces and get creative with fashion! Not only are you building personality in your wardrobe, but you’re also helping the environment! Buying handmade or second-hand items is also a great way to support small businesses!
