You may have heard of the Law of Attraction before in movies, books and television shows without even realizing it. In Amy Schumer’s recent movie “I Feel Pretty,” an average, insecure woman wakes up one day thinking her appearance has changed, making her the most beautiful woman in the world. She acts like a completely different person, and her life begins to change around her. Her new found confidence leads her to a new relationship and landing her dream job. Her physical appearance never actually changes, but her whole life does because of her new mindset and confidence. This movie and many others are modeled after the LOA without explicitly stating it.

The Law of Attraction (LOA) is a simple scientific principle that seems more complicated than it is. According to the theory of Laws of the Universe, there are twelve different laws that operate within the universe. This includes the Law of Attraction, as well as the Law of Karma, which is most often heard of. These laws have religious roots in Buddhism and Christianity. It’s thought that the LOA has roots as far back as 391 B.C. and the Greek philosopher, Plato. One of his most famous quotes is “like attracts like.” According to the LOA, your thoughts create your reality. You have to believe that you are capable of creating the life that you dream of and act accordingly.

What is the Law of Attraction?

It all starts with the Law of Vibration. The Law of Vibration states that vibrations of similar frequencies are drawn together. This works hand in hand with the Law of Attraction. By thinking a certain way, your subconscious mind will work to attract what you desire. Think of your beliefs and actions like a magnet: like attracts like. For example, a scarcity mindset will attract scarcity. In order to break this cycle, you must think and act with an abundant mindset. What you put into the universe comes back to you ten-fold… What energy do you want to attract? Use this energy to create your dream life.

How to manifest what you want

Manifesting can be as simple as speaking what you want into existence. Act like you already have what you want, because you do. It’s just a matter of timing with the universe. When you’re talking with friends or your family, tell them what you want. You can even speak these words of affirmation out loud to yourself or write them down. Be as specific as possible. One of the key points for manifestation is that you will be rewarded with what you want, or something better. Just because one opportunity does not play out the way you wanted it to does not mean that all is lost. Try to view your loss as a sign, because everything happens for a reason. Something better is on its way to you. Another way to manifest is by creating a vision board or a Pinterest board with images that motivate you. By constantly looking at pictures that are inspiring, you can actually visualize yourself in that position. This will tell your subconscious mind what you want and will make your goals easier to achieve. Make sure you are taking action to reach your goals. The right mindset is the tool that gets you there, but the actions are the driving force. Work as hard as you can to reach your goals, and then leave it in the hands of the universe. This is the hardest part, but you can’t be stressed about something that you know is coming eventually.

What can I use it for?

The Law of Attraction applies to everyone, but it can be especially helpful for college students. We are at the beginning stages of our lives. Since our childhoods have come to an end, we need to decide what direction we want our lives to take, and this is easier said than done. Most twenty-somethings have no idea what they want their life to look like, and that’s okay. The LOA can be used for smaller goals, which can eventually lead to a bigger one. Think about all of the opportunities that college can lead to: internships, graduate school, law school, medical school, life in a new city and post-graduate employment. Instead of thinking, “I really want this job after graduation, but I’ll never be chosen as one of the applicants because of my GPA,” try thinking, “I will be hired for this job after graduation. I have all the skills they are looking for.”

The Law of Attraction can change your life and your whole outlook on life if practiced properly. Remove anything that might stand in your way of reaching your goals. This can include toxic people and a negative mindset. Make sure that you manifest things that will better align you with your highest purpose. Meditate and reflect on what your next step is if you need some extra help. By practicing the Laws of the Universe, you can work to make your dreams reality. If you want to learn more about the LOA, I recommend the documentary and book “The Secret,” which is available on Netflix.
