Why Be His When You Can Be Yours?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

After a day of classes, she needs something to make her smile. She walks through her apartment door only to see a gorgeous bouquet of vibrant flowers awaiting her arrival. Each flower seems meticulously placed in a light pink vase with a card underneath. As she walks near to admire the sight, the light lavender scent intensifies. She spots a box wrapped in festive Valentine’s Day paper. She decides to open the card first, yet it only makes her more anxious to unwrap her present. The card reads, “Happy Valentine’s Day to the number one girl in my life. Enjoy a relaxing night on me!” Smiling from ear to ear, she quickly rips off the wrapping paper to see her surprises inside. She finds a pair of soft heart pajamas, the movie Valentine’s Day, sugar cookie mix with Valentine M&M’s, new holiday cookie cutters, and (of course) Andre Blush. She can envision how the rest of her night is going to go now.

Every Valentine’s Day, we single ladies sit around wishing and hoping a man is out there who cares about us. A man that cares enough, he will shower us with affection. All of us would love for a man, even the one we have now, to tell us how great we are. We want to hear how our hard-working actions never go unseen. Unfortunately, on days such as Valentine’s Day, we do not always get that. So, why drain yourself in negative emotions? Why feel unwanted, undesired and unappreciated? It’s unnecessary.

Valentine’s Day is meant to be a day filled with love. I believe it is a day to appreciate others, and, in my case, yourself as well. Yes, Valentine’s Day has become a day for couples to be up each other’s a**es, but forget them. Who wants to feel stress and pressure over cards and presents for someone else on a random day in February? I don’t. Take this as an opportunity to reconnect with the people you truly love and who truly love you. Send a best friend from home some candy. Send your family cards and chocolate. Maybe even send a dog treat home for your puppy. All in all, remind people you love them. If this isn’t good enough for some of us to feel better, then plan a Valentine’s Day for yourself. Take a lesson from the girl at the beginning. I can guarantee she is sitting with her feet up, watching Valentine’s Day, eating a warm fresh cookie, and sipping on some champagne right now. This girl is genuinely happy and the last thing on her mind is a guy. I promise you this because I’m the girl from the beginning.

So ladies, if you don’t have a man it’s no problem. In the end, you are the only person that matters. Treat yourself. Love yourself. Happy Valentine’s Day.
