Why Being The Only Single Friend Is The Best Friend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

It’s a Monday night. You’re sitting in your extra-large tee shirt, waiting on your Chinese and the season premiere of the Bachelor to come on. You text all the girls to see where they are at to watch the show because they all seemed to have been missing for a few hours.

“John decided to take me to dinner tonight. Record it for me so I can watch tomorrow!”

“I forgot to tell you but I’m just going to stay at Eric’s tonight! Text me with the details of all the crazy girls.”

“I’m at the mall picking out an outfit for Danny’s formal this weekend so I’ll try to make it back in time!”

*Well… guess I’ll just watch it alone and cry because I’m FOREVER alone!*

If you have ever experienced all your close friends having a perfect boyfriend, it is a different feeling. The cuddling sessions of gossip on a Sunday morning lessen, girls’ night taco Tuesday’s turn into a girls’ night +1 taco Tuesday’s, and you overall just feel like your prince charming will never come around.

Ladies, I have just what you need to look at the glass half full. Yes, all your friends might be in a relationship, but this is your time of freedom, self-.embracement, and to be a blast in a glass. I am going to give some advice on how to take being the only single friend the best role there is.

You can do whatever you want, whenever you want. You can be flirty back with that cute boy at the Grind on a Sunday morning offering to buy your coffee. You can cook yourself an amazing meal, not having to share a bite with anyone. Take advantage of this time and do things for YOU, not anyone else. Experiment, go outside your comfort zone. This is a time to do anything without feeling guilty or scared.

Get to know your friends’ boys. I absolutely love all of my friends’ boyfriends. I see them as a second brother and dad always looking out for me as I do them. Get to know them not only so it’s fun being the third wheel at the movies, but so you can make sure your friend has only the best out there that she deserves.

You can be set up for blind dates, formals, or date parties and not feel guilty about not being able to go. College is about trying new things and making the best memories possible. Because let’s be real, who doesn’t like to dress up and hit a night out on the town?!

You can ask anyone to be your plus one to any event. Your roommate, sister, lab partner – anyone! Take advantage taking your girlfriends. You can scope out cute boys and not have a worry in the world while doing so.

Lastly, make sure you tell her how happy you are for her. Be a supporting friend, tell her that she deserves the best. Because one day, you’ll find that one that was worth waiting all this time for!

I grew up in Charleston, West Virginia. Growing up here I knew there was a possibility of going to West Virginia University my entire life. Although I decided to start my college career at the University of Kentucky, those country roads led me back to WVU in the spring of my sophomore year. This was also the point when I decided to establish myself as a Broadcast Journalist student. Since this point I have strived to become the best possible journalist I can be. I am currently working as a weekend reporter for WDTV-Channel 5 in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Prior to receiving this position, I worked as an intern with WCHS-tv/FOX11, in the summer of 2014, where I learned critical editing, interviewing, writing, and speaking skills. I worked closely with anchors, reporters, editors, directors, producers, and even the web team. Aside from the television industry, I am the Campus Correspondent for the West Virginia University Chapter of the online entertainment magazine, Her Campus. Another position I currently hold is the Social Media Chair of WVU’s Radio Television Digital News Association Chapter. In the Fall of 2012, I became a sister of the Alpha Phi Fraternity, in which I held the position of ‘Big Sister Chairman.’ My other passions include horse back riding, scuba diving, being outdoors, and running. I am very adventurous and I try to stay well rounded. My goal in life is to live life to the fullest and be the best possible version of myself. My ultimate goal would be to earn a spot as a reporter/anchor for Fox News, New York. I plan to graduate in December of 2016 and look forward to my future.
