We all know that taking tests in college is a stressful event. The first tests are normally the worst. Each professor has their own style of lecture, class notes and test layouts. You can’t expect to go into a test knowing exactly how it will be presented on the page, but you can follow these five tips to help you be prepared for your next exam!
Â
1. Study with classmates.Â
Creating a study group is a great way to interact with your classmates and learn at the same time. By being in a group, you are able to relay information in different ways so that everyone better understands the material. Many professors around campus suggest studying in groups because they realize how beneficial another perspective can be. So grab some friends and get studying!
2. Don’t just rely on class notes.Â
Many professors encourage taking lecture notes in class. They may write it on the board or have a PowerPoint, but chances are you likely missed copying something in class. Be sure to cross-reference your sources. Use your book, lecture notes and class handouts to make sure that you are studying everything you need to!
3. Go to office hours.Â
One of the best things about WVWC is our professors! Most of them are willing to work with you during office hours and help you understand things that you may not have understood in class. They are a great resource because, hey, they teach the class! Creating a relationship with your professor is an important step towards academic success!
4. Utilize walk-in tutors.Â
Most majors offer up student tutors FOR FREE! That’s right! You can go to walk-in tutoring without and appointment and sit down and go over the material with someone who has taken the class before. Theses are students on campus that understand how the class works and what to expect when testing. They can help you with anything from homework questions to helping prepare for your next exam! I have heard stories of students that went to walk-in tutoring and their test grades rose about 5-10 percent! Talk about an improvement!
5. Don’t expect, prepare.Â
You can’t go into a test expecting to have 100 percent of the material memorized. We are human, after all! So when studying keep in mind that every professors different. Make yourself a relaxing environment that you can concentrate in. for me, I like to cuddle up in a big, fuzzy blanket and sip on tea or coffee. If you destress while you are studying, you will feel more prepared for the test when it comes.Â

I hope that these tips help you ace your next exam! Good luck and keep chugging!
