When it comes to creating a strong resume, Wesleyan senior Cassie Curtis is on track to building a great one. From Morgantown, W.Va., she came to Wesleyan because of family tradition and the athletics on campus, especially softball.
“I walked on the softball team my freshman year,” Curtis says. “I have played since I was little, and I really enjoy playing the sport. I love the teamwork that we have here at Wesleyan. We are really a close knit family.”
Cassie is working toward becoming a physical education teacher, specifically special education PE, also called adaptive PE. This field works to better specific motor skills with games. It is broken down into units with an emphasis toward learning a focused motor skill.
“I love this area of physical education,” Curtis says. “Most schools have this program, but the funding has been cut in a lot of places.”
Curtis says she also wants to work with children who have behavioral and emotional disorders. After she finishes student teaching in fall 2014, her goal is to go to West Virginia University to get a Master’s in Adaptive Physical Education.
To work toward developing her skills for this career, Curtis is also director of activities for Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA), a volunteer at Stockert Youth Center as a service scholar, a Clinical II student, and a member of the National Society of Leadership. At Stockert and Buckhannon-Upshur High School, Curtis will spend more than 150 hours with different students during this semester alone, but she says she loves every minute of it and can’t wait to have her own students in the future. As the director of activities for ZTA, she gets her experience with athletics, including organizing intramurals, Greek week, and exercise programs for sisterhood bonding. She also keeps a log for sisters who do extra workouts.
When she has free time, Curtis says she loves to go to the gym, walk the River Walk Trail, watch movies (especially Identity Thief), and hang with her awesome roommates Jacqui Ominchinski, Jill Teubert, and Bre Taylor.
See you in the classroom, Curtis!
