Experimental Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

With everyone looking to New York Fashion Week for the hottest new trends, it can make you want to experiment with stepping outside the box in your own wardrobe. But just how can you get inspired? Here are a few tips to kick-start your style experimenting wherever you are!

To gain new style inspiration, you don’t need a personal stylist; you just need a good friend (preferably someone whose taste, style or image you admire). Plan a shopping trip with a twist!

  • To get outside of your comfort zone, pick out an ensemble for each other to try on!
  • This will show you how you look in clothes that you wouldn’t normally chose for yourself.
  • This also can bring you into contact colors, fabrics and shapes of clothes you’ve never tried!

So, encourage your friend to go full-out with creativity, and you can do the same for her!

Another fun thing to try is splitting up and giving each other an hour to a half an hour to buy each other a present for under $10. The key is to find something that your friend would never buy for herself.

It is surprising just how quickly your style boundaries can change when you learn what your friends think you’re capable of!

When in doubt, you can start small. Experiment with choosing a color that you never wear in a fit that you love. This is the same with patterns; just take baby steps in changing what you normally go for. You can expand from there!

  •  If you want to experiment with a new cut or fit of clothing, but you aren’t entirely ready to commit, try looking for that cut of clothing in a thrift store. You can buy it for cheap and see if the clothing really works on your body and fits your lifestyle.
  • If it does, then you can go after the same type of items in better quality.

And, of course, you can always keep up with fashion week. Just remember, if a look inspires you, to make it your own! Fashion is all about change and evolving!

As Coco Chanel says, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

So, be true to yourself and have fun experimenting with your new look!

Stay classy, ladies!

I am adopted from Russia and was raised in West Virginia. I am a double major in English (Writing Concentration) and Musical Theatre. I love art in many different forms be it writing, singing, acting, drawing/painting, or design. I adore fashion and it has helped me become the person that I want to be in life. I am a very open person and love talking to people, so feel free to ask me anything! I am honored to be a part of the Her Campus team and I hope that my writing will bring you a smile. If I'm not in the theater or typing up my version of the great American fashion column, you can always hear me coming from the click of my heels. My advice to all: Stay classy!
