Something about fall always encourages me to swipe the dust off my box of sweaters. The warm oranges and that warmth the color brings always make me feel comfortable about sitting within my own mind. When I peek inside my mind, I also see why this season is so special. BECAUSE HALLOWEEN IS COMING!
Without a doubt, All Hallows’ Eve is my absolute favorite day of the year. To me, this encourages the weirdest state of mind, deepest darkest thoughts and fears to come alive! It allows me, personally, to confront my own fears and become more aware of them—beginning to move past them. An example of the fear that continues to reappear is the character Michael Myers.
It is not Michael himself that I fear; it is his attributes. In all honesty, Michael and I could probably get to know each other and become very well-acquainted. What causes me to feel uneasy is his stealth and continual awakening from death. You cannot outrun him, he can always find you when you attempt to hide, and he doesn’t speak. Yet, understanding Michael’s madness is the true challenge.
Halloween also allows those avid horror movie watchers to relish in their hobby. I myself enjoy most horror films that cross my path. There is something about Halloween that allows acceptance of the gore, acceptance of the weird and strange. It also provides a feeling of comfort and excitement or adrenaline when you turn out the lights and become absorbed in this new atmosphere in the film.
This holiday allows your mind to be placed in the land of “what if?” or make believe. Do monsters exist? Was there really a Pumpkin King? Where do the witches go? All of these assumptions of ghouls and gremlins from down below come to life this day. Yet, it is also socially acceptable. Children are told stories that are remembered into adulthood and shared throughout the years during the season, but they believe them most on October 31st.
Fall is a very special time for me as an adult, believer in the unknown, and a storyteller. Halloween allows my creativity to come into full blossom and my deepest state of mind to feel comfortable with itself.
