What makes your good morning a good one?
Is it waking up to the sounds of bacon sizzling and popping on the stove?
Is it dancing around your room to Beyonce?
Is it running 5, 10, however many miles?
Is it watching your favorite News channel or talk show?
Is it the taste of that first drink of coffee or juice?
Is it picking up your devotional as soon as you wake up?
My days are so packed tight from school to work to Real Marriage study to Celebrate Recovery to doing worship to 25Below and trying to eat a little something when I find a free moment that it is hard most days to have a good, gentle morning. That makes those mornings all the more worth savoring.
Over Labor Day weekend, I had a few good mornings. Saturday morning, my fiance came in to kiss me goodbye before he and my dad left to play in the Noel Family Reunion Golf Tournament. I woke up a little later and spent the morning with my mom and my brother, laughing and enjoying the start of football season by watching and commenting on ESPN’s pre-game coverage.
On Sunday, I woke up to the sounds of sizzling bacon and fresh french press coffee. My fiance and family were talking and laughing and relaxing like we didn’t have just two hours to check out of our cabin. We sat and laughed and poked fun at each other and ate a big breakfast and had ice cream cake (for those of us who could eat ice cream cake… and it was in good spirits. We tried to throw away as little as possible of my sister’s Graduation cake from her party the night before).
On Monday morning, I woke up after panic attacks and weird energies during sleep and tossing and turning all night to go outside and sit on the back porch. I had some Ohio-brewed Silver Bridge Coffee Company french press (Campfire blend), the newspaper, a beautiful little dog on my lap, and my iPad to work on blogging and email. It was one of those mornings to let be what already was and simply relax in the sound of the gently pouring rain. The neighbors were a bit noisy, but after awhile, their noise was comforting.
Look at your calendar. Find a day where you don’t have anything going on until the afternoon, and have a good morning. Don’t wait until later in the year to try and crash relax. Develop your good habits early this semester. Last semester, I crash relaxed only because I had to. I got tonsillitis a few days before finals, and when you’re a music major-ish-moreso-like-minor, that’s not good news.
