An Open Letter to My New Sisters

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

Dear Sisters,

First and foremost, welcome. Your decision to join our sisterhood is one that excites me immensely. I look forward to growing with each of you individually, and collectively, as Zeta sisters. I am confident that each of you will serve as a great addition to our organization. Your gifts, talents and love will allow our sisterhood to flourish more beautifully than ever before. As you continue forward in this journey, I would like to offer some advice that I feel will assist you integrate and shine in Zeta Tau Alpha.

  1. Take the creed to heart. Don’t aimlessly memorize the lines and then allow them to be forgotten. Each specific component of the creed highlights a specific value of our organization that each sister strives to exude every day. Allow the words to touch your heart and alter your words, steps, and actions in a way that betters the world around you.
  2. Make a concerted effort to attend all events. I understand that we are all busy individuals who are overwhelmed by life sometimes, but carving out time to devote to sisters is worthwhile. Laughing together with your best friends is the greatest way to lift your spirits, especially on darker days. You might be stressed, but once you are surrounded by loving women who care about your happiness, you’ll be happy with your decision. Also, sign up for philanthropy events. Dedicate your efforts to service projects. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.
  3. Go to sisterhood events. Whether it’s lunch or an uplifting activity, bonding with your sisters is, to me, the most fundamental aspect of Zeta. Sit beside sisters you aren’t familiar with. Ask them questions; get to know them. Be sure to write them a warm fuzzy at chapter or send them a positive tweet when they’re down. Give and you shall receive.
  4. Be proud to be a Zeta! Wear cool stitched letters. Craft fun wooden letters. Smile and always let your invisible crown shine!
  5. Lean on your sisters. If you are having a rough day, reach out to a sister and go on a drive or a Sheetz run. Go to the suite, chill with some sisters, and cry over The Notebook. Bake some cookies. Go for a walk. If you are feeling lonely, text a sister and play Cards Against Humanity. Craft. Hammock. It is our duty as sisters to encourage, support and love one another unconditionally, “…love, the greatest of all things.”

My lovely zistas, welcome once again to our sisterhood. Zeta Tau Alpha has transformed my life vastly, but the individual women within it have made me a more kind, compassionate and aware human being. I only hope that we can facilitate the growth for each of you that we have experienced. Your journey has begun and it will continue forever!

ZLAM,

Arin

Just a small town girl living in an even smaller college town. I'm an Accounting major at WVWC in hopes of someday going to law school. I enjoy coffee, jumping in puddles, & petting the locals' dogs when they take them for walks on campus.
