RLCG Charles,
I am a freshman, and my boyfriend and I have been dating since my sophomore year in high school. Over the summer, we promised each other that we would make it work… But he attends a different school, and I am afraid that we won’t last because of the distance between us.
He also plays sports and is taking 17 credit hours. It seems like we can only talk for a short amount of time before he has to go to practice, do homework, or go to sleep. Getting my heart broken is the last thing I want to happen… What should I do?
In Love & Worried
Dear In Love & Worried,
Going to college is a big change in itself. Having a boyfriend and going to different schools is even more difficult. Through the distance, will he remain loyal to you, love you, and make an effort to maintain the relationship? Distance in a relationship is like driving while wearing a blindfold. It’s difficult and extremely dangerous, but it can be done with support, trust, and honesty from both parties.
The most important thing to take into consideration is your heart. A woman’s heart is like a newborn baby. It must be treated with care! You can’t just give your heart to anyone. If you and your boyfriend are serious and you’ve made a promise to remain together, even though you go to different schools, then nothing should affect that promise.
My girlfriend and I live in different states. It gets tough for us because we miss each other. We talk every day, and we make time for each other no matter what. I am involved with a lot on campus, but I make sure I see her as much as humanly possible. The same should go for your boyfriend. Whenever he gets the chance, he should be calling you, texting you, or letting you know that he’s thinking about you in one way or another. (The same goes for you, too.)
You can’t worry about time, distance, or heartbreak. If you love someone, you should be willing to lay your heart on the line for that person, even if that means possibly getting your heart broken. Remember this: make sure you stay true to yourself through the difficult times. Once you change who you are, you lose yourself. If you love someone, don’t let distance get in the way.
Be strong. Be you. Stay beautiful.
