RLCG Charles, Is My Guy “That Guy”?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

RLCG Charles, what can I do to make sure the guy I like isn’t “that guy”?

—Dazed and Confused

Dazed and Confused,

This is a tough question. All guys can be really good at playing sweet and innocent, but here’s the catch: sometimes a guy might actually be sweet! Since so many guys play this act, it’s difficult to tell whether he’s trying to take you home or if he’s genuine and sincere in his ways. Even though man and woman were made for each other, to love, care, protect, trust, and co-exist, we tend to act in ways which we shouldn’t (i.e., being “that guy”). Maybe it’s the YOLO lifestyle we have now, or maybe it’s some internal conflict we have that causes us to do these things.

Here are 5 criterion that will show you whether or not he’s “that guy”:

  1. He’s overly talkative about his success and everything he’s accomplished in life.

  2. He only compliments you on your body (e.g., Damn, girl! Are your legs tired? Because you have been running through my mind all day long!).

  3. He isn’t interested in who you are as a person. He only cares about what you can do for him (e.g., whenever you need something, he is always busy; whenever he needs something, he expects you to be there with a smile on your face).

  4. He observes other women with a certain look in his eyes, and he seems flirty, touchy, and comfortable texting lots of other girls. Ladies, take note: when he looks at other women but claims to only like you, saying, “You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen,” make sure he means that.

  5. He hides and locks his cell phone. Some guys might think this isn’t fair to say, but if he doesn’t have anything to hide, he should give you the lock screen password. Be careful of this. You don’t want to be someone’s sideline girl.

If he meets any of these requirements, consider finding a new guy. Remember this, ladies: a real man is not based on his muscles, voice, eyes, money, social status, sweetness, smartness, or maturity level. A real man is someone who will be there for you at your highest high and your lowest low, who loves you for you and only you.
