Throwback Thursday Flick of the Week: Clueless

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

Think plaid. Lots of plaid. Now think 1995. Here’s one more for you: “Ugh, as if!”

You either already know where this article is headed, or you’re completely lost. Well, I’m here to help with this week’s throwback Thursday film: Clueless! Now if you haven’t seen Clueless, don’t worry; I’m here for you. The single most important thing I can tell you about this film is that it’s the original Mean Girls—and by original I mean it’s 10 times better. Don’t get me wrong, I like Mean Girls, but nothing will ever come close to the ultimate Queen B, Cher, and her best friend Dionne. The two most popular girls in school make it their mission to transform two lives, but only to make theirs better of course.

90s comedies are something of gold already, but there is something about this cult film in particular that has captured my heart.

Set in Beverly Hills, Ca., teens Cher and Dionne are two very wealthy divas with nothing better to do than try to “fix” the lives of two people around them. One is their teacher, the other a strange new girl. Throughout the course of the film, they learn a lot about themselves, as well as a little something about love and relationships. Clueless is the best of both worlds: all the nostalgia of a coming-of-age story with just a hint of Valley Girl flair.

Allow me to set the stage:

Cher is against dating high school boys because she thinks they’re all shallow, but when she is the only single person in her friend group, her heart start to yearn for someone, even if that someone is… Nope! I can’t give that away; it’s my favorite part if this film! I will tell you this much: she does try to date a high school boy, but she learns that she may not be his type, if you catch my drift.

Cher is just your average, everyday 16-year-old girl. The only difference is that she’s the daughter of a guy who makes $500 an hour. She’s a princess with the best intentions for people, even if those intentions are a little “clueless.”

This is a film everyone should go watch. I will, however, warn you about mild profanity, drug use and sexual content. The film is rated PG-13 so anyone 13 and over should be okay to view this. You can even find Clueless on Netflix to stream! Go steal your best friend’s password, grab some snacks, slip into your most comfy bunny slippers, and enjoy this week’s throwback film: Clueless!

RATING: 4/5
