The frigid temperatures and blizzard-like conditions of the winters in West Virginia would make most WVWC students want to throw on some sweats and trudge on to class with their Snuggies in tow—if they even made it out of bed, that is.
But this is far from the case for HerCampus WVWC’s latest Style Icon, Sarah Ramey. Not even a foot of snow could deter the junior design major from looking like she stepped out of the pages of Vogue every single day.
When Sarah isn’t busy adding fierce pieces to her wardrobe, she spends her time rocking out on the dancefloor as a member of the WVWC Dance Company and supporting her sisters as a member of Alpha Xi Delta.
First and foremost, however, Sarah is a unique individual with a mind all her own. She stresses the importance of incorporating an overall sense of individuality and personality into your wardrobe. For her, style is a means of expression rather than a means of fitting in—which is a philosophy we can all stand to learn from.

MS: What does the word “style” mean to you?
SR: To me, style means dressing to reflect my personality. Each day presents itself as a new opportunity, a chance to express myself. Style is a way to correspond my outfit to my mood or an event I might be dressing for.
Â
MS: How would you describe the way you dress?
SR: I like to call my style vintage, with a mix of classic and hippie. Some days, it’s a little more punk. I like a lot of different styles, so I try to incorporate them into each outfit.
Â
MS: Why is style important to you?
SR: Style is important to me because it gives me the chance to individualize myself. The way I dress is for my own satisfaction, if I look good, I feel good and I get a lot accomplished. I can make specific selections for any occasion and change up my style based on my feelings. I liked to be recognized by my appearance and style is a great way to portray that.
Â
MS: What are some of your favorite trends this season?
SR: I would say some of my favorite trends are the high-wasted pants or shorts as well as the crop tops to match. Thigh-highs are also a popular item to pair with a cute dress and booties. I love the floral patterns mixed with the punk-rock look. Plaid and Aztec are also a pretty popular theme. You can never go wrong with an all-black everything look, but bright colors are also in style and I love that look, too! It really just depends on my mood.
MS: Where are some of your favorite places to shop?
SR: My favorite places to shop are boutique type places with one-of-a-kind clothing. I’m also a huge fan of Urban Outfitters and American Apparel. I love to find individual clothing items from several places, keeping in mind how I will be coordinating them with other pieces I already have.
Â
MS: How has your style changed over the years?
SR: My style has changed over the years from dressing like everyone else to fit in to dressing in a more individualized way to stand out. I want to be known for the way I present myself because I believe that says a lot about a person. Once I got older, I realized that standing out was a good thing and I shouldn’t care what others thought. If I liked it, I was gonna go for it.
Â
MS: Care to share any style tips with your fellow collegiettes?
SR: My advice would be to take time with your appearance; it’s okay to take pride in the way you look. It’s easy to just put on the same old and just shuffle off to whatever you’re doing. Don’t be afraid to take the extra time for yourself. Everyone deserves it! Â Â Â
